Misako Renbutsu didn't need a conventional academic background to win over the Japanese industry. In 2005, she debuted in the episodic film Inu no Eiga, but it was two years later that her name caught the attention of casting directors. Nobuhiko Obayashi, a veteran with a sharp eye for young talent, gave her the lead role in Tenkosei: Sayonara Anata.
That role as a student who swaps bodies with a classmate earned her the Blue Ribbon Award for Best New Actress. She was only 16 years old.
And the gamble paid off.
Renbutsu wasn't chasing the quick fame of teen magazines. Instead of cashing in on her image on variety shows, she chose to focus on projects where the script mattered more than the budget. That's how she ended up shooting River in 2012.
During the 2010s her profile shifted toward roles with a much harsher dramatic weight. In 2012 she starred in River, a film exploring the trauma left by the 2008 Akihabara massacre. That restrained, understated performance firmly moved her away from the youth-idol label the industry tries to pin on every young actress.
But the commercial side of the industry came knocking as well.
In 2017, she took on the role of Riza Hawkeye in the live-action adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist. Over 1,200 million yen in box office earnings from the first installment confirmed that her name could sell tickets without major personal marketing campaigns. She reprised the role in the two sequels shot in 2022, maintaining strict physical training for the action scenes.
Few actresses of her generation maintain that balance between prestige cinema and pure entertainment.
In 2023 she took part in Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon (My Happy Marriage), where she played Hana Saitou. The project was a box office hit in Japan and cemented her reputation as a top supporting actress capable of stealing scenes from the leads.
Joining major franchises has defined her career in its maturity. In 2024, she joined the cast of Golden Kamuy to play Umeko. Filming in the icy locations of Hokkaido posed a technical challenge, which the actress overcame without using stunt doubles for most of her scenes.
She is a method-driven professional who prefers the quiet of the set to the noise of social media.
But her work isn't limited to the big screen. On television, she has maintained a steady presence on networks like NHK and TBS. In 2025, her involvement in new cable fiction projects geared toward international distribution on digital platforms was confirmed.
Her contract with the Westside agency has remained in effect for more than fifteen years.
