She arrived in Tokyo at eighteen with a fixed idea in her head. Before stepping onto a film set, she studied psychology at Otsuma University, a detail that explains her ability to dissect complex scripts. Her first big break came in 2014 with Greatful Dead.
That Eiji Uchida film put her on the map of raw independent cinema. She played a young woman obsessed with watching lonely elderly people. What could have been a minor role became a statement of intent about her acting style.
Takiuchi prefers silence to overacting.
In 2017, she took the lead role in Side Job under the direction of Ryuichi Hiroki. The story followed a woman who worked at city hall in a town affected by the Fukushima disaster while working as a sex worker in the capital on weekends. She won the Best Newcomer award at the Blue Ribbon Awards for her restrained performance.
Because her films don't chase cheap tears or the applause of the mainstream audience. So she chose to step away from the more commercial circuits to delve into characters who live on the margins of Japanese society. And the bet paid off.
In 2019, she shot It Feels So Good. The film sparked debate for its erotic content and its focus on female desire in an end-of-the-world setting. But Takiuchi defended the project as an exploration of individual freedom against rigid social conventions.
International critics began to take notice of her in 2020. Her role in A Balance by Yujiro Harumoto proved she could carry long-form films with just a couple of gestures. In this film she played a documentary filmmaker caught in an ethical dilemma that ran more than 150 minutes without losing its tension.
Box office numbers don't always support these projects.
But her reputation at European festivals grew rapidly after she took part in the Panorama section of the Berlinale. In 2021, she worked on Under the Open Sky alongside Koji Yakusho. It was a supporting role, but a crucial one for balancing the narrative of a story about a former yakuza trying to rejoin society.
In 2023, she appeared in Yoko, a production that put her back at the center of Japanese auteur cinema. Here director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri made good use of her ability to convey vulnerability without slipping into cheap sentimentality. Takiuchi understands that in film, less is often much more.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Dear Family, a film based on true events about the creation of an artificial heart. The shoot required specific technical preparation to understand the medical protocols of the era. That same year, she recorded 11 Rebels under the direction of Kazuya Shiraishi.
This last production was shot mainly on location in Kyoto Prefecture. The crew used high-speed cameras for the action sequences choreographed with real swords. Takiuchi had to undergo intense physical training to meet the demands of the period script.
She has also been a constant presence on television. In 2024, she appeared in the NHK series Dear Radiance, playing Akiko Fujiwara. The series' production design featured more than two hundred hand-made period costumes to reflect the Heian era.
The international distribution deal for her latest film was closed for three million dollars.
