Mirei Kiritani didn't go looking for fame. Fame found her on a street in Chiba while she was still in high school. In 2005, the agency Sweet Power named her the prettiest girl in her prefecture, and the rest was a marketing machine that ran with surgical precision.
She made her film debut with Haru no Ibuki in 2006. But her real influence came from the pages of Seventeen magazine. There, she went from an anonymous student to a style icon for millions of Japanese teenage girls who copied her way of dressing and wearing her hair.
In 2010, she played Kurumizawa in Kimi ni Todoke. It was a supporting role, but a crucial one in showing that her face was more than just decoration. Kiritani quickly learned to handle comedic timing without the overacting that often weighs down manga adaptations.
Box office numbers were strong in 2015 thanks to Heroine Shikkaku. The film grossed over 2,400 million yen in Japan. That year confirmed that her name could sell tickets on its own, without big co-stars.
And the audience devoured the proposal.
Kiritani didn't limit herself to reading fictional scripts. For six years, from 2012 to 2018, she held a seat on the News Zero newscast on NTV. There, she analyzed the day's headlines every Tuesday in front of a audience of millions. That move broke the barrier that usually separates models from the rigorous world of journalism on Japanese television.
After her marriage to actor Shohei Miura in 2018, many expected a quiet retreat from public life. But reality was different. In 2022, she decided to end her contract with Sweet Power after 16 years of professional partnership in order to manage her career independently.
It was a risky decision.
In 2023, she returned to fashion with collaborations for European luxury brands. But film was no longer her absolute priority. She preferred to choose small projects where creative control was real and not imposed by the major studios.
The shoot for Gensun no Ichi in 2024 closed out a cycle of low-budget productions. The film had a shooting schedule of just 18 days and premiered in select theaters in Tokyo. In 2024, the actress signed a sponsorship deal with a French jewelry brand that set a limit of three public appearances per year for 50 million yen.
