Fumihiko Tachiki was born in Nagasaki Prefecture in 1961. His voice has a texture that is not taught at any voice acting academy. He began by voicing supporting characters in mecha series during the 1980s, but his career changed because of a curt, authoritative order.
In 1995, he played Gendo Ikari.
That cold man who hid his eyes behind mirrored glasses needed a specific kind of gravitas. Tachiki found it in a low register that bordered on a menacing whisper. Hideaki Anno asked him not to show any compassion in the recordings. And so one of the most hated fathers in anime history was born.
That role defined his future in the Tokyo studios. Casting directors sought his tone for characters who needed to command respect without raising their voice. But Tachiki did not want to be limited to dark offices and world domination plans.
The industry soon discovered that his tone could sell real danger. In 2000, he became the official narrator of the mixed martial arts events PRIDE Fighting Championships. His introductions, shouting the fighters' names, gave an epic sheen to the violence in the ring.
That register saved him from irrelevance.
But the contrast came with absurd humor. In 2006, he accepted the role of Taizo Hasegawa in Gintama. The character was a broke government official who lived in a cardboard box. Going from the absolute authority of a military commander to the sobbing of a comical homeless man was a risky move that few expected.
Tachiki recorded more than 300 episodes playing this professional loser. He did it without losing his vocal dignity and always keeping one foot in the drama. Because real exhaustion adds truth to the character.
The pace of work in Japanese studios did not slow down with the turn of the century. In 2012, he returned to his role as Kenpachi Zaraki in Bleach and kept the aggression needed for a warrior who lives only for battle. His technique consists of straining his vocal cords right before entering the booth to achieve that broken, natural tone.
In 2021, he closed the chapter on his most famous character with the release of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. It was the end of a twenty-six-year journey playing the same gloomy man. The actor confessed that after the final recording session he felt a very real physical emptiness.
As of 2024, he is still active voicing Admiral Sakazuki in One Piece. His contract requires full availability for the early-morning recording sessions at Toei Animation's studios. Paid per work session rather than per line recorded in the official script.
