Synopsis of Neon Genesis Evangelion

In 2015, fifteen years after Second Impact, a global catastrophe that cut the human population in half, the futuristic city of Tokyo-3 prepares to face the Angels, beings of unknown origin. The UN has created the organization NERV there, which develops the Evangelion, giant biomechanical units capable of fighting them. Shinji Ikari is a teenager estranged from his father, Gendo Ikari, NERV's director, who summons him to the city. On arrival, he witnesses UN forces battling a giant Angel, and he is soon required to pilot an Evangelion. The series, created by Hideaki Anno and the studio Gainax, aired on TV Tokyo and explores the clash between a boy who does not want to accept that responsibility and the need to defend humanity.

Trivia about Neon Genesis Evangelion

Hideaki Anno conceived the series as a metaphor for their four-year struggle with depression, and tried to pour all of their feelings into it.
Anno proposed a female lead, but character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto rejected the idea, arguing that a male protagonist would be more believable for the mecha genre.
When the series reached TV Tokyo, the team had completed only twelve episodes in nearly two years, so it had to produce the remaining fourteen in a third of that time.
Commentator Eiji Otsuka wrote a letter to the Yomiuri Shimbun complaining about the ending, and the debate eventually became a national one.
In Japan alone, 800 million videos and merchandise items were sold, generating over 400 million U.S. dollars in profit.
The fifteenth LaserDisc, "Genesis 0:X," was offered by mail only to fans who had purchased all fourteen discs.
"Neon Genesis Evangelion" won the Animation Kobe award in 1996 and received it again in 1997; it also earned the Nihon SF Taisho Award and the Japan Media Arts Festival Excellence Prize in 1997.
In 2026, a new anime series of "Neon Genesis Evangelion" was announced during the EVANGELION:30+ festival, produced by Studio Khara and CloverWorks.
