Helin Kandemir took the stage at the Istanbul Film Festival in 2019 to receive the award for Best Actress. She was fifteen years old. She shared the honor with her two co-stars in Kız Kardeşler, a film that permanently changed the course of her career.
It was the moment the industry stopped seeing her as a girl.
That job, under the direction of Emin Alper, earned her a place on the European festival circuit. In the film, she plays Havva, one of three sisters sent to the city as maids who end up returning to their poor village in the mountains. Critics praised her ability to hold dense silences in a suffocating rural setting.
And her commitment to auteur cinema was no accident.
Before that recognition, she already had years of television work behind her. Her debut came in 2010 with the series Bitmeyen Şarkı when she was just a six-year-old girl. But she really learned the craft on the Istanbul film sets during her teenage years.
In 2018, she took part in Bir Litre Gözyaşı and shortly after joined the cast of Hakan: Muhafız, the first original Turkish production for a global streaming platform. These projects helped her gain visibility beyond her country's borders.
But her real change of direction came with the drama Doğduğun Ev Kaderindir between 2019 and 2021. In this production, she played a celebrity with a complex emotional weight that moved away from the typical children's roles.
The Turkish industry is demanding when it comes to timing.
The market waits for no one, and Kandemir decided to diversify her profile. In 2022, she took on the role of Leyla in the teen series Duy Beni, a project that explored school bullying and class differences. The series had a massive impact on social media and grew her follower base in international markets such as Latin America and Spain.
In 2023, she took on the challenge of playing Nihal in Bihter, a new film adaptation of the classic novel Aşk-ı Memnu. The shoot required an early twentieth-century setting and a much more restrained performance style.
So her name began to come up for projects that required a specific vocal technique.
Few people know that Kandemir has a very active parallel career in dubbing. She has lent her voice to the Turkish versions of major animated and live-action productions. In 2023, she worked on the Turkish dub of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, voicing Gwen Stacy for the local market.
Her training in voice dubbing gives her control over breath and the nuances of her voice in a way few actors of her generation manage to master.
In 2023, she also took part in Istanbul Trilogy: Meze, a project directed by Ferzan Özpetek. This collaboration linked her with one of the most respected Turkish filmmakers in Italy and the rest of Europe. The short film focuses on food culture and personal relationships around a table.
Production of Bihter wrapped its shooting schedule with an estimated budget of several million Turkish lira.
