Hwang Chan-seong was already working in television before the K-pop phenomenon took him to stages across half the world. In 2006, he appeared in the comedy Unstoppable High Kick, playing a high school student with the same name as his own. That role laid the foundation for a career that has always moved between music and the film set.
It was no coincidence.
Many people associate him exclusively with the group 2PM, but his acting training began almost in parallel with his dance practice. After several years of minor roles, he caught critics' attention in 2013 with 7th Grade Civil Servant. That series pushed him to move away from the tough-guy image and explore a more restrained and dramatic style.
But the big shift in public perception didn't happen until 2018. In the series What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, he played Go Gwi-nam, an employee obsessed with saving money and appearances, and earned recognition from the Korea Drama Awards. The Korean industry stopped seeing him as a singer who acts and began treating him as a seasoned actor.
At the end of 2021, he made a decision few expected within a system as rigid as Korea's. He chose not to renew his contract with JYP Entertainment (the agency that launched his career) in pursuit of projects with a different narrative weight. In 2022, he signed with L'July Entertainment with the goal of prioritizing his acting career over his music.
And the gamble paid off.
During that stage of personal and professional change, he filmed Show Window: The Queen's House between 2021 and 2022. It was a suspense drama in which he moved away from traditional romantic comedy to play a character caught up in family betrayals. The series reached historic viewership levels for the Channel A network, with peaks above a 10 percent audience share.
Chan-seong understands that longevity on screen depends on choosing scripts, not just physical presence. In 2023, he took part in the romantic comedy Bo-ra! Deborah, playing a cheating, selfish boyfriend. It was a risky role because it broke with the gentleman image his fans had built up over a decade.
His technical evolution shows in the economy of gestures he uses in his recent work. In the 2024 series Bitter Sweet Hell (also known as Our House), he plays a key character in a plot full of dark humor and mystery. Here he shares scenes with veteran figures of the industry and maintains a solid performance without falling back on the usual tics of younger actors.
Beyond Korea's borders, he has made the most of his bilingual skills to break into Japan's television market. In 2024, he starred in the Japanese drama Jun Kissa Ko-hi-, playing a café manager with a mysterious past. The project was shot under a Japanese production system that is usually much stricter about filming schedules than Korea's.
Since his personal life changed in 2022 with his marriage, the actor has managed his contracts through his own logistics structure. He still holds his position in the group 2PM for occasional events, but his filming schedule is fully booked until the end of 2025. The international distribution deal for his latest Korean series was closed for more than five million dollars before the first episode aired.
