Breaking the good girl mold

Jennifer Winget didn't ask for permission to enter the Indian industry. She was twelve years old when she appeared in Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995), and even then her presence in front of the camera was unsettling in its naturalness. She wasn't the star, but she knew where to stand so the frame would find her.

Her time on national television was no stroke of luck. She worked on minor projects until, in 2005, she joined the cast of Kasautii Zindagii Kay. There she learned that her country's audience does not forgive boredom and that consistency is worth more than a flash of fame.

And audiences became obsessed with her.

In 2013, she accepted the role of Kumud in Saraswatichandra. It was a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production that demanded exhausting emotional control. Winget won the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actress that same year for her ability to hold three-minute close-ups without blinking.

But the studio system in Mumbai tends to pigeonhole women into the role of professional sufferer. Winget knew that if she didn't break the mold, she would end up as a caricature of herself. In 2016, she made a sharp turn that many considered a commercial miscalculation.

The plunge into darkness

She accepted the role of Maya Mehrotra in Beyhadh. The character was an obsessive sociopath with a traumatic past and icy elegance. It was the first time an actress of her stature on television dared to play the outright villain of her own story.

It was a suicidal bet.

Audiences responded with ratings spikes the industry hadn't seen in a decade. Winget shed any trace of sweetness and committed to a physical performance in which the white costumes contrasted with her violent actions. The success of 2017 forced the writers to create a second season in 2019, because no one could imagine Beyhadh without her.

In 2018, she returned to more conventional drama with Bepannah. The series dealt with grief and betrayal, but she brought a dryness that kept it from cheap melodrama. She won the Lion Gold Award for this work, proving that her name was already a guarantee of profitability for advertisers.

Away from the spotlight, her personal life made noise that she tried to silence with work. She married in 2012 and finalized her divorce in 2014. She gave no exclusive interviews and didn't sell details of the breakup to gossip shows.

Maturing in the digital space

With the arrival of streaming platforms, Winget looked for projects with fewer episodes and bigger budgets. In 2020, she premiered Code M, playing Major Monica Mehra. She had to train in martial arts and learn military protocols to move away for good from the image of a soap opera star.

The series did so well that in 2022 they shot a second season focused on corruption within the army. Winget earned one of the highest fees in the industry for this shoot (around 1.5 million rupees per episode), placing her at the top of the pay scale among actresses of her generation.

Unlike many of her peers, she doesn't use social media to overexpose herself. She prefers that mystery work in her favor when negotiating advertising deals. Her image contracts usually include clauses giving her absolute control over her look.

Winget is a key figure in understanding the shift from analog television to on-demand content in South Asia. In 2024, she began pre-production on a new psychological thriller for an international streaming platform. Filming was scheduled in locations outside the usual Mumbai sets to achieve a rawer aesthetic.

Her career today is measured by her ability to say no to mediocre scripts.

Her contract for her latest 2024 production stipulated that shooting days would not exceed ten hours. Winget insisted on this condition to ensure each scene kept the necessary tension without burning out the crew. Her annual salary during this period topped 20 million rupees net.
