Jeremy Jordan auditioned for Newsies in 2011 with the confidence of someone with nothing to lose. At that point, he was just a kid from Texas who had passed through Rock of Ages without making much noise, but his performance as Jack Kelly changed the game for him. New York critics named him the next great Broadway tenor, and his Tony nomination in 2012 confirmed the industry's interest was real.
And the gamble paid off.
Before that breakout, Jordan built his career in regional productions and supporting roles that barely covered rent in Manhattan. His time at Ithaca College gave him technique (near-surgical vocal control), but it was his ability to convey a tough-guy vulnerability that won over casting directors. In 2011 he starred in Bonnie & Clyde, and although the musical closed after just 36 performances, his name was already on every producer's list.
His move to television was not a slow transition but a head-on collision. In 2013, he joined the second season of Smash, playing Jimmy Collins (a self-destructive songwriter whose intensity had certain parallels with Jordan's own). The NBC series did not survive low ratings, but it served as a showcase that proved to Hollywood his face could carry a leading role.
But film is a different beast.
In 2014, he filmed the movie adaptation of The Last Five Years alongside Anna Kendrick. The shoot was a technical challenge because the songs were recorded live on set to capture the raw emotion of a marriage breaking up. And although the film had a limited theatrical release, it became a cult classic among musical fans around the world.
Financial stability arrived in 2015 with the premiere of Supergirl. For three seasons, he played Winn Schott (the tech expert and the heroine's moral support), and the role required him to move to Vancouver to keep up with the filming schedules for CBS and later The CW. In 2018, he decided to leave his regular role to regain control of his theater projects on the East Coast.
Jeremy Jordan never hid that his priority was the stage. In 2018 he returned to Broadway in American Son (a stark drama about racial tensions that had nothing to do with the sequins of his early days). The play was adapted for Netflix in 2019 with its original cast, proving his range could hold up without hitting a single musical note.
Taking risks has always been part of his career path.
In 2023, he took on the role of Neil Bogart in the biopic Spinning Gold. The film chronicles the rise of Casablanca Records, and Jordan carried the weight of a production that aimed to capture the excess of the 1970s. Despite mixed reviews of the script, his performance was singled out by the specialized press as the driving force that kept the film afloat.
In 2024 he voiced Lucifer Morningstar in the animated series Hazbin Hotel. The project began online and became a massive hit on Prime Video, racking up millions of views in its first few weeks on air. That same year, he returned to the New York stage to star in the musical version of The Great Gatsby at the Broadway Theatre.
The production of The Great Gatsby in 2024 closed its first month of performances with a box office gross of $1,284,842.
