Theater as a Testing Ground

Jessie Mei Li was born in Brighton and grew up in Redhill. She didn't chase stardom from the cradle. She left university to work with children with special needs before acting seriously crossed her path.

In 2019, she landed a role in the play All About Eve at the Noel Coward Theatre in London. She shared the stage with Gillian Anderson and Lily James. It was an accelerated learning experience under the direction of Ivo van Hove, where she learned to handle the pressure of live performance.

The leap to the screen was almost immediate.

Her training at the National Youth Theatre gave her a very specific physical technique. But it was her ability to project calm in chaotic environments that caught the attention of casting directors in the United Kingdom. Li didn't automatically chase commercial projects.

Netflix's Bet on an Unknown Face

In October 2019, Netflix announced that Li would play Alina Starkov in the adaptation of Shadow and Bone. The series premiered in 2021. Li brought a mix of vulnerability and firmness to a character who had a different physical description in the original novels.

The first season was filmed in Budapest. Li had to learn fight choreography and adapt to a large-scale shoot with constant visual effects. And the bet paid off with fans of young adult fantasy.

In 2021, she also appeared in Last Night in Soho under the direction of Edgar Wright. It was a supporting role as Lara. This foray into genre cinema let her see how an author with a style as distinctive as Wright's works.

And the audience responded with millions of hours of viewing.

Li has openly spoken about her ADHD diagnosis in adulthood. The condition shapes how she approaches scripts and how she handles downtime on set. For her, mental order is just as important as pure acting technique.

Action and Budgets in Wales

The release of Havoc, an action film directed by Gareth Evans, was set for 2025. She shares the cast with Tom Hardy and Timothy Olyphant. Filming took place mainly in Wales and required a level of physical preparation greater than her previous roles.

Her mixed heritage has shaped part of her professional identity. Her father is from Hong Kong and her mother is English. Li has mentioned on several occasions that this duality gives her a peripheral perspective on the traditional British industry.

She prefers shoots where the physical effort is real and doesn't rely only on green screens.

The second season of Shadow and Bone premiered in 2023. Months later, the streaming platform decided to cancel the series due to production costs and the impact of the industry strikes in the United States. The budget for each episode exceeded $5 million.
