Kwak Tae-gun was not born for the spotlight. His destiny was in the classroom, because his father (a high school principal) had already mapped out a stable teaching career for him. But cinema has strange ways of bending life stories, and watching Rain Man shattered any plan of family inheritance.
He decided he wanted to be an actor, and to make it happen he had to lie. In his first auditions he used the name Ji Sung so his family would not find out he was pounding the streets of Seoul in search of a break. In 1999 he debuted in the series KAIST after calling the screenwriter directly to ask for a role.
And the gamble paid off.
During his first years in the industry, he worked in supporting roles that got the job done. But in 2003, the series All In radically changed his status. He worked alongside Lee Byung-hun on a production that brought the country to a standstill, and that was when he understood his profile fit high-intensity drama.
After completing his mandatory military service between 2005 and 2007, his return to the screen was a statement of intent. He did not look for comfortable roles. In 2007 he starred in New Heart, playing a cardiac surgeon with technical preparation that bordered on obsession. He spent weeks observing real surgeries so that his hand movements would not look like an amateur's.
But the absolute breaking point came in 2015 with Kill Me, Heal Me. The project was a minefield for any actor, because he had to embody a man with seven distinct personalities. Several top-tier stars turned down the role for fear of looking ridiculous or of physical exhaustion.
The risk was total.
Ji Sung not only accepted but built each identity with its own vocal tone and physicality. He went from teen idol to a seven-year-old girl or a rough man with a Jeolla accent. In 2015 he won the Grand Prize (Daesang) at the MBC Drama Awards for this work. International critics began comparing him to the method actors of 1970s American cinema.
Over the last decade, his career has centered on characters who operate on the margins of the law or morality. In 2017, he starred in Defendant, playing a prosecutor who wakes up in prison with amnesia and a death sentence. For this role, he lost an alarming amount of weight and endured sixteen-hour shooting days.
In 2021, he led The Devil Judge. He played a judge who turns trials into a reality show in a dystopian South Korea. The series avoided cheap moral speeches to focus on the aesthetics of chaos. But Ji Sung always prefers silence to excessive media exposure off the set.
In 2022, he took on a double challenge in Adamas, playing twin brothers with opposite personalities. It was an exercise in technical precision in front of the camera, requiring absolute synchronization with the visual effects. The actor shot most of the scenes twice, varying his body position by just millimeters.
In 2024, the production of Connection reached audience peaks of 14.2 percent in its time slot. Filming for this series about addiction and police corruption lasted seven months and took place mainly in industrial locations on the outskirts of Seoul. Wrap.
