Hwang Jung-eum did not want to be an actress when she signed her contract with Starworld in 2001. She was part of Sugar, a Korean pop group where her voice often took a back seat. But music was not her place. In 2004, she decided to leave because she felt her personality did not fit the rigid discipline of Korean idols.
She started from scratch on television with supporting roles that barely drew attention. Before she became successful, she had to endure harsh criticism of her acting ability. Her luck changed in 2009 thanks to the comedy High Kick Through the Roof. That role as a clumsy university student won her the Best New Actress award at the Baeksang Arts Awards.
And the risk was worth it.
That success earned her massive advertising contracts. In 2010, the Korean financial press highlighted that she was one of the figures most capable of driving immediate sales. But she wanted more than to be a friendly face in cosmetics ads.
Many critics thought she was only good for making people laugh. But in 2013, she accepted the script for Secret Love, and the direction of her career changed completely. She played a woman who goes to prison for a crime she did not commit. The series reached a 18.9% audience share in its final episode.
Nobody expected that change.
In 2015, she followed up two projects that put her at the top of the television industry. First came Kill Me, Heal Me, then She Was Pretty. In the latter, she played a woman who loses her beauty after a family crisis. The production sold broadcast rights to several Asian countries for figures that surpassed previous records.
So her name became a guarantee of profitability for private networks. During that period, she worked eighteen-hour days with barely any rest between shoots. Her method relied on constantly repeating her lines until she lost her voice.
It was the end of an era.
After a necessary break for personal reasons, she returned to work with darker stories. In 2020, she starred in Mystic Pop-up Bar for the cable network JTBC. It was a fantasy production that required digital effects unusual for cable television at the time.
But her most aggressive transformation came in 2023 with The Escape of the Seven. For the first time in two decades of acting, she played a pure, ambitious villain (Geum Ra-hui). The series had an estimated budget of 46,000 million won.
In 2024, she filmed the sequel titled The Escape of the Seven: Resurrection. Filming for this second part stretched over several months on locations in Seoul under the direction of Oh Joon-hyuk. The production used Arri Alexa cameras to achieve a cinematic look in every episode.
