Jung Il-woo shouldn't be here. In 2006, a car accident left him bedridden in a hospital for months, just before he was set to start filming Unstoppable High Kick.
But the actor chose to hide the severity of his injuries so he wouldn't lose the role of Yun-ho. He took on the physical risk for an opportunity that ultimately brought him instant fame in South Korea.
And the gamble paid off.
That debut turned him into a teen phenomenon overnight. But behind the cameras, reality was different: his body still carried the aftereffects of the impact, and he had to pause his activity for nearly a year to fully recover.
In 2009, he tried to move away from his good-looking boy image with The Return of Iljimae. It was a grueling shoot where he had to learn martial arts and swordfighting techniques in extreme weather conditions.
In 2016, life dealt him another hard blow. While filming a series, he was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm after suffering severe, persistent headaches.
He was 28 years old when doctors told him his head was a ticking time bomb. The news plunged him into a deep depression for months, because he didn't know whether he would wake up the next day or whether his career was over in that very moment.
In the end, he decided the only way forward was to keep working and traveling. He refused to let fear hold him back and completed his mandatory military service as a social worker in 2017 due to his medical condition.
There was no turning back.
He returned to the screen in 2019 with Haechi. In this production, he proved that his ability to carry a historical drama remained intact despite the mandatory break and the pressure surrounding his health.
His face suited period productions better than expected from very early on. In 2012, he appeared in Moon Embracing the Sun, and the series reached a 42.2 percent audience share in his country.
But it was in 2021 that he regained the unanimous acclaim of critics with Bossam: Steal the Fate. He played a rough, marginalized character who had nothing in common with his earlier roles as the perfect heir or prince.
It was the most-watched project in MBN's history.
In 2022, he took a risk on independent film with Highway Family. He played a homeless father with mental illness and lost a considerable amount of weight to make the begging scenes feel realistic.
Because the actor has always preferred physical risk to the comfort of the TV studio. So in 2023, he returned to the stage in the play The Elephant Song to reconnect directly with audiences.
In 2024, the actor focused his efforts on running his own digital content channel and selecting scripts for the international market. His contract with the agency Studio 252 was signed on the premise of prioritizing the quality of the characters over mass commercial exposure.
