Son Ho-jun didn't break into the Korean entertainment industry with a script under his arm. His first attempt to make a living in Seoul was as the leader of a K-pop group called Tachyon. The project sank in 2007 after releasing a single and barely left a mark on the sales charts of the time.
He spent almost a decade in the shadows before anyone truly noticed him. He worked in tiny supporting roles that no one remembers today. But in 2013, his luck changed with the premiere of Reply 1994. His character, Haitai, gave him the push he needed to stop being simply Yunho's childhood friend in the eyes of the press.
And the audience responded.
In 2014, he entered the world of producer Na Young-seok with Youth Over Flowers and later on Three Meals a Day. He showed a shy, overly polite side that won him a fan base very different from that of teen idols. This stint in reality television was key to casting directors seeing him as an everyday guy audiences could relate to.
Many Korean actors avoid variety shows for fear of breaking the spell of their fictional characters. Son Ho-jun did the opposite. He used that closeness to jump into leading roles in dramas that demanded a heavier emotional load.
In 2017, he starred in Go Back Couple alongside Jang Na-ra. The series explored marital regret and required him to handle heavy dramatic material. It drew an average audience rating of 7.3% for its final episode, a solid figure for the late-night slot on the KBS2 network.
Because drama sells, but suspense keeps viewers coming back.
Korean television often typecasts actors based on their looks. He avoided that trap by accepting roles as an ordinary man in extreme situations. In 2019, he appeared in The Light in Your Eyes, where he shared the screen with veteran Kim Hye-ja. The project received critical praise for its treatment of old age and memory.
In 2022, he took on the role of a firefighter in The First Responders. The production was demanding and required intense physical training to shoot action scenes without stunt doubles for most of the takes. His small-town boy image gave way to a far more physical and commanding presence on screen.
He reunited with Jang Na-ra in 2023 for the psychological thriller My Happy Ending. The tone here was much darker than in their previous collaborations. The plot moved away from romantic comedy and into territory of betrayal and paranoia.
The gamble paid off.
To shoot the fire scenes in the first season of The First Responders, fifteen real fire trucks were used, provided by the Gyeonggi authorities. Son Ho-jun had to carry protective gear weighing more than twenty kilograms during fourteen-hour shooting days.
