John Salley is 2.11 meters tall, which tends to be a problem for cinematographers. But in 1995 Michael Bay wasn't looking for a conventional actor to play Fletcher in Bad Boys. He wanted a presence that could intimidate without having to open his mouth.
Salley already had three NBA rings in his drawer when he decided Hollywood would be his next court.
It wasn't a retired star's whim. Before ending his time with the Detroit Pistons, he was already frequenting comedy clubs and studying the rhythm of stand-up monologues. Because for him, acting was always an extension of his wardrobe.
In 1995 audiences first saw him as the hacker Fletcher. It was a small but effective role. So Jerry Bruckheimer called him back for Bad Boys II in 2003.
The industry often typecasts athletes as bodyguards or silent villains. But Salley broke that pattern thanks to a natural gift for talk that he polished on cable television.
Between 2001 and 2009 he hosted The Best Damn Sports Show Period.
There he learned that the camera doesn't forgive awkward silences. He appeared in more than a thousand episodes of the show, and that gave him a mental quickness that few method actors ever achieve. In 2005, he tried his luck in the romantic comedy Ladies Night, and in 2009 he joined the reality show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.
His work as a producer gained weight over the years. In 2010, he produced the documentary Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy. He wasn't chasing easy applause but digging into the roots of African American humor in the United States.
And it worked.
In 2019, he returned to his best-known character in the series L.A.’s Finest. A year later, in 2020, he appeared in the third installment of the film franchise that launched his acting career. Bad Boys for Life grossed 420 million dollars worldwide.
Salley is a man of numbers and strict diets.
In 2022, he played Darius King in Sneakerella for Disney+. For 2024, he worked again under the direction of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah in Bad Boys: Ride or Die. His salary with the Detroit Pistons in the 1991-1992 season was 1.5 million dollars.
