Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg knew her real name would never fit on London theater marquees. So she decided to adopt the name of Henry VIII's third wife to keep things simple with casting agencies.
She was twenty when a ballet accident shattered her knees and forced her to make a living in front of film cameras. That injury ended her dream of becoming a professional dancer but opened the doors of the British film industry for her.
In 1973, she appeared in Live and Let Die as Solitaire. That Bond girl role opposite Roger Moore typecast her in ethereal beauty and period productions for nearly a decade. But she wanted to call the shots on set.
And the gamble paid off.
Nobody in Hollywood believed in a medical drama set in the Wild West in the early 1990s. The script for Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman reached her hands at a critical moment in her personal life.
Jane Seymour read the script just one day before starting to film the pilot episode, because she urgently needed income after a ruinous divorce that left her with millions in debt. She signed a five-year contract without knowing whether the series would make it past its first month on air.
The production stayed on the air until 1998 and produced 149 episodes that were exported to almost every international market. That success gave her the financial freedom to start producing her own television projects through her family company.
Not everything in her career was prestige.
In 1980, she starred in Somewhere in Time alongside Christopher Reeve. The film was a complete box office flop on release, but over the decades it became a cult title for romance fans.
In 2005, she broke away from her image as a Victorian lady with a supporting role in the comedy Wedding Crashers. She played a mature woman who chased younger men and showed she could handle sharp, biting humor without losing the elegance that defined her.
She took on the challenge of aging on camera without resorting to surgery that would erase her facial expressions. As a result, her later work focused on characters with deeper intellectual weight.
In 2022, she starred in the series Harry Wild, playing a retired literature professor who solves crimes in Dublin. The production secured its continuation with a third season filmed entirely in Ireland during 2024.
Away from the spotlight, she runs a jewelry brand and has published more than ten books on painting and personal growth. In 1992, she received the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.
Her estimated net worth exceeds $60 million.
