Johnny Green didn't need to attend a conventional film school to understand that the image trumps the word. His training took shape in London in the late nineties (an environment where the aesthetics of music videos and cutting-edge advertising consumed everything). There he learned that a single second of footage can cost a fortune and that every frame must justify its existence on its own.
That obsession with technical detail quickly led him to work with major global brands.
His early major work for brands such as Audi and Mercedes showed an almost obsessive fixation on textures and the internal rhythm of editing. But Green didn't want to be just a director of sixty-second commercials. He wanted a narrative that would allow him to stretch time without losing the visual tension he had perfected in the commercial sector.
Control of the frame is his true signature.
Before moving into fiction, he worked on short pieces that bordered on the experimental. In 2016 he directed projects in which he explored the weight of silence through anamorphic lenses and minimalist lighting. That period helped the industry see in him a storyteller able to sustain an uncomfortable atmosphere without relying on explanatory dialogue.
Because his films don't aim to please viewers with predictable plot twists. His approach is based on observation and the grit of reality. So when he agreed to shoot high-budget campaigns in 2021, he decided to treat every shot as if it were part of an auteur cinematic drama.
Brought in multimillion-dollar contracts thanks to his ability to shoot in extreme weather conditions.
But money was never the main driving force behind his creative decisions.
In 2022, he began developing the screenplay for his most ambitious venture into feature-length filmmaking. Principal photography officially began in spring 2024 with a small crew to preserve intimacy on set. Green insisted on shooting on natural locations in Iceland to avoid using green screens (a decision that noticeably increased the budget).
For this director, the physical environment changes the actors' performances in a way that digital post-production could never replicate. In 2025, the film is expected to enter the European festival circuit. But Green already has his eye on a new project about brutalist architecture in Eastern Europe.
The camera he used for the exterior scenes was an Arri Alexa 65 with custom lenses from manufacturer Panavision.
