Jon Øigarden is not an actor who asks permission before entering a scene. In the series Exit (2019), his portrayal of Jeppe Schøitt made clear that despicable characters are his technical specialty. We watched him urinate on luxury furniture and mock Norwegian morality with a coldness that unsettled audiences.
He trained at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in the early 1990s.
But his face hasn't always been tied to three-piece suits and glass penthouses. In his early years after graduating in 1996, he worked at the National Theatre of Norway, where he honed a gift for transformation that few of his generation could match. His move to the screen was no lucky accident, but a logical progression toward formats that required less vocal projection and more restrained gesture.
In 1998 he made his film debut in 1732 Høtten. It was a small role, but it helped casting directors take notice of his intense gaze.
And the gamble paid off.
Over the following decade, he alternated local productions with more ambitious projects in Scandinavia. In 2010, he starred in the black comedy En ganske snill mann alongside Stellan Skarsgård. Here he showed he could handle dry humor without losing an ounce of the Nordic seriousness that defines him.
His real international breakthrough came when he took on the role of a pathetic villain in Norsemen (2016). His character, Jarl Varg, is a study of male insecurity and power. He made a Viking dictator both ridiculous and terrifying at the same time, without ever sliding into cheap parody.
Because Øigarden understands that humor works best when treated with the gravity of a funeral.
In 2014 he led the cast of Mammon. This journalistic thriller won an International Emmy and put him on the radar of major European production companies. Playing Peter Verås forced him to drop the histrionics and embrace the vulnerability of a man cornered by the system.
He's someone who prefers silence to media noise.
Unlike other Norwegian actors who moved to Los Angeles as soon as they had the chance, he chose to stay in Oslo. That didn't stop him from taking part in global projects, though. In 2018 he joined the film 22 July, directed by Paul Greengrass for Netflix. In it, he played lawyer Geir Lippestad with a restraint that avoided any unnecessary sensationalism about the Utøya tragedy.
In 2023 he starred in Festning Norge (The Fortress). The plot is set in a Norway cut off from the world by an impenetrable wall, where he plays a politician who must manage an internal health crisis. The series won the Best Screenplay award at the Canneseries festival.
His salary per episode on high-end productions now ranks among the highest in the Scandinavian industry.
But it hasn't been a straight path. In 2021 he took part in the film Den største forbrytelsen, which depicts the role of the Norwegian police during the Holocaust. It was a demanding shoot that required deep historical research into civilian collaboration with the Nazi regime.
In 2024, he filmed the series So Long, Marianne, about Leonard Cohen's life on the Greek island of Hydra. The production had a budget of 100 million Norwegian kroner and was shot mostly in English to make distribution easier in English-speaking markets.
