Ida Elise Broch didn't need any tricks to get Norway to notice her. In 2008 she played Cathrine in The Man Who Loved Yngve, and audiences sensed that something was happening on screen. She had a dry, direct presence that didn't match the usual shyness of debuting actors.
She was born in Oslo in 1987. She grew up surrounded by fiction but trained rigorously at the Norwegian National Academy of Theatre so that her name wouldn't be just an appendix to her brother's. Being the sister of Nicolai Cleve Broch helps open doors, but it doesn't help you hold a close-up when the director yells action.
And the gamble paid off.
In her early years, she alternated short films with genre productions such as Fritt Vilt III in 2010. In this horror film, she proved she could carry the physical demands of a survival movie without losing her natural touch. But the real leap to a bigger stage came with international television.
In 2014 she joined the cast of Lilyhammer. Playing Birgitte gave her the chance to work on a production with American funding and understand the rhythms of the global industry. That series about a mobster in Norway was the perfect laboratory for what came next.
In 2019 Netflix premiered Hjem til jul. In Spain it was known as Navidad en casa, and its impact was immediate. Johanne was a thirty-year-old nurse tired of family pressure about being single. Broch gave the character an ironic vulnerability that connected with audiences tired of saccharine romantic comedies.
The series became a niche phenomenon that pushed the platform to produce a second season in 2020. But what mattered wasn't the ratings; it was how Broch handled silence. Her reactions at family dinners said more than any line of dialogue in the original script.
That was when her face stopped being exclusively Norwegian.
Despite her international fame, she kept her feet firmly planted in the local industry. She turned down generic offers abroad in search of more complex characters in her native language. She then chose to explore suspense and historical drama with a maturity that no longer relied on her youthful charisma.
In 2022 she starred in Fenris. In the series she played Emma Salomon, a biologist who returns to her hometown to investigate the disappearance of a young man in a wolf-infested conflict zone. The production demanded a somber tone and complete restraint, which Broch handled with technical precision.
That same year she appeared in Gulltransporten. This historical action film tells the story of the escape of Norway's national treasure from the German invasion in 1940. It was one of Viaplay's most ambitious productions up to that point and broke box office records on its digital release.
The actress has managed her career without rushing toward Hollywood. She prefers the security of Scandinavian cinema, where the script usually outranks the marketing budget. For her, the job is about finding the truth of the character amid the snow and mud of an on-location shoot.
Filming Gold Run required 400 extras for the scenes at the Lillehammer train station.
