In 1960, a young French woman with an icy gaze took the stage at the Berlin International Film Festival to receive the Silver Bear for Best Actress. Her name was Juliette Mayniel, and she had just finished shooting Kirmes under Wolfgang Staudte. That international award seemed to mark the start of a European run of success that never materialized, by her own choice.
Juliette Mayniel wasn't looking for fame, but fame found her in a Paris café. She was twenty-two when Claude Chabrol noticed her for Les Cousins. That 1959 film suddenly placed her at the heart of the Nouvelle Vague. Yet she never felt at ease in the intellectual circles of the French capital.
German cinema gave her her first major recognition.
Her role in Kirmes earned her international recognition before she turned twenty-five. On that shoot she learned that restrained gestures were worth more than any dramatic outburst. It was a lesson she applied throughout her professional career on the European continent.
In the early 1960s, the Italian film industry came knocking. These were the years of genre cinema and large European co-productions. She shot La guerra di Troia in 1961, and shortly afterward she met Vittorio Gassman. That encounter permanently changed her personal and professional path.
Her relationship with Gassman was intense and brief.
That romance gave birth to her son Alessandro in 1965. Juliette chose to stay in Italy and work on productions that let her balance her family life. She appeared in titles such as Il maestro di Vigevano alongside Alberto Sordi. She worked with directors like Mario Monicelli, but she always kept a careful distance from the stardom of the gossip magazines.
During the years 70, her presence on screen became intermittent. She appeared in the television series L’Odissea in 1968, playing Circe. It was one of her most memorable roles for European audiences. But Mayniel's interest in the spotlight was fading as time went by.
She wanted a life far from the Roman paparazzi.
In the 1980s, she decided to move to Mexico. She settled in San Miguel de Allende, where she found the peace Europe had denied her. She stopped acting on a regular basis and focused on painting. Her son Alessandro Gassman would often visit her there, far from the media noise of Italy and the memories of the Cinecittà studios.
She passed away on July 21, 2023, at the age of 87.
Her last credited appearance in a fiction production was in an episode of the series Il commissario Corso, which aired in 1991.
