Jung Hye-sung spent five hours a day in the makeup chair to stop looking like herself. This happened in 2016 during the filming of Love in the Moonlight. She had to play a princess who was overweight, and the makeup team covered her face with layers of silicone that erased her natural features.
That production decision was not an aesthetic whim. But it helped the Seoul industry take notice of an actress who until then had only occupied the margins of the frame.
It was her first major bet.
Before that breakthrough in appearance, she debuted in 2012 with a minor role in To the Beautiful You. Those were years of learning, in which she took on supporting projects such as Potato Star 2013QR3 or Pride and Prejudice in 2014. In this last legal drama, she began to show a restrained acting style that differed from the histrionics common in MBC productions.
In 2017, her luck turned around thanks to Good Manager. She played an undercover investigator posing as a clumsy intern, and audiences connected with her comic timing. The series closed with a 18.4% average audience share in its final stretch and moved Jung away from traditional supporting roles.
And the market reacted immediately.
That same year, she starred in Oh, the Mysterious alongside Yoon Kyun-sang. It was a 40-episode production in which she carried the weight of a dense criminal plot. But Korean critics are not always kind to leaps into the unknown, and the actress had to deal with the pressure of keeping ratings up in SBS's prime-time slot.
Her training in performing arts at Sungkyunkwan University allowed her to navigate those peaks of popularity without losing control of her career. Because Jung Hye-sung has always preferred technical control over the glitter of red carpets.
An actor's career in South Korea sometimes depends on factors beyond talent. In 2021, the actress was part of the main cast of Joseon Exorcist, a dark fantasy blockbuster that aimed to be the biggest phenomenon of the year.
Nobody saw it coming.
The series was abruptly canceled after only two episodes aired, due to historical controversies and complaints from sponsors. It was a financial and logistical blow that kept Jung off screen for months. But she returned in 2022, leading the cast of New Normal Zine, a drama centered on the world of digital fashion magazines.
In this project, she played an editor obsessed with deadlines and journalistic rigor. The series aired on the TVING platform and marked her definitive shift toward fast-paced streaming formats.
Her contract with the agency J.Wide Company ended, and she began managing her projects with a much leaner structure. In 2023, she focused on strengthening her direct line of communication with fans without depending on major TV studios. The shoot for her latest film appearance wrapped with a budget of 5,000 million won.
