Kanae Ito arrived in the Japanese capital with a firm goal: to give voice to the characters she watched on television as a child. In 2007 she landed the role of Amu Hinamori in Shugo Chara!, and that casting decision defined her career. It was not a matter of luck. The anime industry was looking for voices capable of moving between vulnerability and overflowing energy without losing technical control.
And she got it on the first try.
Aoni Production recruited her after seeing her performance at the Amusement Media Academy. In 2009, her portrayal of Ruiko Saten in To Aru Kagaku no Railgun allowed her to explore a more down-to-earth and less cartoonish register. But it was her ability to voice several different characters in a single production that caught the attention of the sector's most demanding sound directors.
She won the Best New Actress award at the 2010 Seiyu Awards and repeated the following year as Best Supporting Actress. Few professionals achieve that double in consecutive seasons. The Japanese market does not forgive a lack of discipline, and she maintained a workload of more than ten series a year.
Consistency defines his cast.
In 2012, she joined the universe of Sword Art Online to bring Yui to life. What seemed like a supporting role became a constant presence that extends to the video games released in 2023, such as Sword Art Online: Last Recollection. So Ito learned to handle characters who age alongside their audience over the decades.
She balanced voice acting with music performances under the Lantis label. Her first album, Kokoro Keshiki, came out in 2011 and avoided excessive electronic arrangements in favor of organic instrumentation. Many fans associate her name with strong-willed characters such as Sena Kashiwazaki in Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai. Still, Ito's technique stands out for its diaphragm control in the high frequencies.
She avoids the artificial screech that sometimes holds back other voice actresses of her generation.
In 2024 she voiced a role in Shin-chan: Shiro no Challenger, keeping the same vocal texture she had at the start of her career. Her largest income today, however, comes from licensing rights for pachinko machines and mobile games. In 2025, her contract with Aoni Production still stipulates a flat fee per thirty-minute recording block, with no royalties for international broadcasts.
