Kang Tae-oh didn't start out alone. In 2013, the agency Fantagio decided actors could also be mass idols and formed 5urprise. It wasn't a typical K-pop group, since acting was its absolute priority. But they were forced to sing and dance across Asia for years to sell a hybrid product.
It was a strange experiment.
In that group, he shared a van with Seo Kang-joon. While his bandmate landed one lead role after another, he stayed in the supporting ranks. For years he accepted secondary roles in daily dramas with more than a hundred episodes, where learning came from script twists and endless shooting days.
Long before Korea truly noticed him, he was already a star in Hanoi. In 2014, he shot the co-production Forever Young, and it exploded in a way no one in Seoul had anticipated. He won Best Actor at the VTV Awards and had to learn to handle fame in a language that wasn't his own.
And the gamble paid off.
But when he got home, his phone wasn't blowing up. He worked on projects such as The Tale of Nokdu in 2019, where he played a villain who handled the sword with flawless technical coldness. It was on that set that casting directors noted his name on the list of supporting actors capable of carrying a storyline on their own.
Because his classic leading-man looks sometimes hid an observational skill well above the average of his generation.
Everything changed with a character who barely raised his voice. In 2022, he played Lee Jun-ho in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and the industry realized charisma doesn't always need big gestures. **He turned a gesture as simple as opening a revolving door into a massive media moment on social media.**
The series reached a 17.5% audience share in its final episode.
But the timing was bittersweet. Just as luxury brands and top-tier screenwriters were sending him offers, the calendar set a mandatory date. In September 2022, he had to put everything on hold to complete his compulsory military service in the infantry division.
He left the military in March 2024. He wasted no time and got to work on the romantic comedy Potato Research Institute for the cable network tvN. In this 2025 project, he plays a researcher with a difficult personality who moves away from the perfect-guy image of his previous roles.
**The contract was signed under suffocating media pressure to see whether he would keep his commercial value.**
His fee per episode multiplied after his global success on streaming platforms. In 2024, he also made a cameo on SNL Korea to show he could laugh at his own image as a reserved leading man. The production of his new series had an estimated budget of 15,000 million won.
