Building a Bilingual Identity

Karine Vanasse started working before reaching the legal driving age. At thirteen, she was already hosting teen programs in Quebec, but it was in 1999 that arthouse cinema put her on the international map. Her role in Emporte-moi (where she played a young woman obsessed with Nana Mouskouri) earned her awards at the Toronto and Valladolid festivals.

That debut was no casual stroke of luck. The actress soon realized the French-speaking market would be too small for her if she didn't master English with absolute precision. So she spent months perfecting her accent in New York to erase any trace of her native Quebec before attempting the leap into major American productions.

And the strategy worked.

In 2009, she decided that acting alone wasn't enough for her creative ambitions. She teamed up with director Denis Villeneuve to produce Polytechnique, a raw film about the massacre that took place in Montreal in 1989. It was a risky decision, because the subject still caused a lot of social friction in Canada.

The film ended up winning nine Genie Awards, and she received the award for Best Actress. That was the exact moment she took control of her own career, regardless of what casting directors decided at the time.

The leap to mainstream television

ABC signed her in 2011 to join the cast of Pan Am. She played a French flight attendant in a series that aimed to inherit the aesthetic prestige of Mad Men. But audiences didn't follow, and the show was canceled after just one season.

That stumble in commercial television didn't slow her rise in Hollywood. In 2013, she joined the cast of Revenge to play Margaux LeMarchal. What started as a temporary collaboration of a few episodes ended up lasting three full seasons, until the series finale in 2015.

He knows how to pick his battles.

Because behind the spotlights of Los Angeles, she chose to return to projects with a much harsher dramatic edge. Between 2017 and 2020, she starred in Cardinal, a police thriller shot in extreme temperatures in northern Ontario. Her performance as Detective Lise Delorme is her most restrained and technical work to date.

The series was exported to more than one hundred countries and proved it could carry the weight of an international franchise without permanently living in California.

Production and New Formats

In 2023, she took on a different challenge by becoming the host of the Canadian version of The Traitors. It's a departure from pure fiction, where she has to handle the psychology of contestants in a competitive reality TV setting.

Her ability to move between French and English allows her to work simultaneously in two industries that rarely cross paths. In 2024, she starred in the series Plan B for Quebec television, a science fiction-tinged drama that explores the possibility of altering one's personal past.

She keeps a low profile in the tabloid press.

She prefers her work to speak for itself through her credits as executive producer. In 2024, her projects in development carry budgets exceeding five million dollars per season in the Canadian market.
