Carolina Giraldo Navarro spent much of her teenage years hearing that reggaeton was a private club for men. In 2006, she auditioned for the TV contest Factor X in Colombia, and that experience taught her little more than how a record contract worked from the inside. Her road to fame was not a straight line, because major labels did not know what to do with a woman who wanted to sing urban music without being a mere decoration.
And that went badly.
For years, she worked as a backup singer for other artists and studied music at the University of Antioquia before moving to New York in 2014. In that city, she considered giving up everything. But she decided to manage her own career and learned the technical details of production so she wouldn't depend on others. In 2017, she released Unstoppable, and the American market began paying close attention to what was happening in the studios of Medellín.
The release of Tusa in 2019 changed the financial game for her team. It was a collaboration with Nicki Minaj that worked because it blended classical strings with a dry trap beat. The song gathered more than 1,500 million streams on digital platforms in record time. As a result, she went from a local promise to chart-topping hits in countries that didn't even speak Spanish.
The gamble paid off.
In 2021, she released KG0516, which showed that her interest went beyond standard perreo. The album included nods to country and bachata. But what truly set her apart from the rest was her ability to manage the industry's timing without flooding the market with empty singles. In 2023, Mañana será bonito arrived and made her the first woman with an entirely Spanish-language album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Her approach to her image has always been technical and carefully measured. In 2022, she voiced a character in the animated film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which was a rehearsal for bigger challenges. She wasn't looking for quick cameos to promote her music. She wanted to act.
In 2024, she made her acting debut in the Netflix series Griselda. She played Carla, a young woman who transported merchandise for the cartel in 1970s Miami. For the role, she went through an acting preparation process that lasted months, and she shot her scenes over more than ninety days in Los Angeles. Director Andrés Baiz noted that her presence on set had nothing to do with her status as a pop star.
The Mañana Será Bonito Tour wrapped up on 2024 with four consecutive dates at Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. In Madrid alone, it sold 240,000 tickets in just a few hours. The show's technical setup included a state-of-the-art LED screen system and a logistics team of more than two hundred people. Production costs for each concert exceeded two million dollars.
