Sofía Vergara didn't land in Hollywood intending to become an actress. The premiere of Modern Family in 2009 shattered glass ceilings for foreign actresses on American broadcast television. She played Gloria Pritchett for eleven seasons and became the comedic engine of the series. Many critics attacked her performance, arguing it was a walking cliché of the Latina woman. But she always maintained that her character was a tribute to the strong women of her native Barranquilla.

But the real money wasn't just in the laughs. Between 2013 and 2020, she was the highest-paid actress in global television according to Forbes magazine. In 2020 her annual earnings reached 43 million dollars. Much of that figure came from advertising deals and her furniture and clothing lines, not just her per-episode salary.

The bet paid off because she insisted on staying true to herself.

She never took diction classes to erase her accent, because she understood it was her greatest competitive advantage. In a Hollywood full of actresses trying to look alike, her voice was impossible to ignore. After the series ended in 2020, she took a seat on the judging panel of America's Got Talent to keep her massive presence in American homes.

The Godmother's Transformation

Her move into pure drama took time but was a calculated decision to avoid stagnation. In 2024 she starred for Netflix in the miniseries Griselda, playing the drug trafficker Griselda Blanco. It was a project she pushed forward herself as executive producer for nearly a decade. She wanted to move away from the glamorous image that had made her rich and explore ugliness and power.

For this role, she underwent three hours of makeup sessions every day. The goal was to hide her recognizable features and transform into a woman who terrified 1970s Miami. Filming the series lasted six months and marked her first major Spanish-language project for the global market. Critics praised her ability to carry the weight of a violent, dark story without relying on the comedic gestures that made her famous.

Her career now revolves around production offices.

Through her company, she still controls much of the content made for bilingual audiences in the United States. In 2024 she voiced one of the characters in the animated film Despicable Me 4. The production budget for Griselda exceeded 50 million dollars and employed more than 200 technical professionals in Los Angeles.
