The Assault of Luc Besson

Luc Besson was looking for a face that was more than just a pretty one for the sequel to its flagship franchise. Kate Nauta came onto the French producer's radar in 2005 without ever having stepped onto a professional film set. Her debut in Transporter 2 broke the mold of the passive villain, since her character barely needed dialogue to intimidate Jason Statham.

The fashion industry became too small for her very quickly.

She won the Elite Model Look contest at age 17 and walked the runways in Milan and Paris before turning twenty. But acting demanded a physical presence she already had thanks to her past as an athlete. On that shoot in Miami, she barely used stunt doubles for the risky scenes and earned the respect of the stunt crew.

The Risk of Being Just a Face

Nauta didn't want to be just another model trying her luck in Hollywood out of boredom. She wrote and recorded two songs for the soundtrack of her first film because music was her real refuge. That decision earned her royalties while other cast members waited for calls that never came.

And the bet paid off for a while.

Smaller projects followed, such as The Game Plan in 2007, where she shared the screen with Dwayne Johnson. Critics were harsh about her next steps in low-budget horror, but she kept up her pace of work. The video-on-demand market absorbed much of her commercial potential after the initial impact of her debut.

Genre Films and Independent Refuge

In 2009, she starred in Nine Miles Down and faced a physically exhausting shoot in the desert. It was a production that went unnoticed by the general public but gave her valuable experience in psychological suspense. And although the press expected her to jump into big superhero productions, she preferred more low-key projects.

She appeared in Avalanche Sharks in 2014, in a genre many consider parody. It was a period when her workload dropped sharply compared with her beginnings at EuropaCorp. She signed contracts for three films that never got made due to lack of funding in the independent market between 2015 and 2017.

In 2019, she returned to the screen in The Great Alaskan Race, playing Thompson. It's a historical adventure film that moves away from the aggressive style that made her known.

In 2020, she took part in Bernie the Dolphin 2, directed by Kirk Harris. The film had limited distribution on digital platforms and closed out its release cycle for that decade with marginal box office in theaters.
