Katharine Ross never fit the mold of the Hollywood ingenue. In 1967, she screamed from the back of a church in The Graduate, and that image defined an era without her really setting out to create it. That Oscar nomination came from pure, accidental talent.
And she didn't care one bit.
She was born in Hollywood, but her heart was on the stages of San Francisco. There she learned that acting was a dry, hard trade. Ross detested red carpets and long-term contracts that chained actors to the major studios of the time.
In 1969, she shot Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid alongside Paul Newman and Robert Redford. She won the BAFTA for Best Actress and became the face of a new generation that was naturally making its way forward. But she preferred to spend her time away from the spotlight.
So she began saying no to big-budget projects.
During the 1970s, her career took an unusual course by industry standards. In 1975, she starred in The Stepford Wives and played Joanna Eberhart. It was a fierce critique of patriarchy disguised as a horror film that still sparks academic debate.
A year later, she appeared in The Hellfighters. That role earned her a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 1976. Ross proved that her screen presence didn't need grand gestures to fill the frame.
But commercial cinema soon began to wear her out.
In 1978, she met Sam Elliott on the set of The Legacy, and her personal life took over her professional priorities. The shoot was difficult (it was a gothic horror production), but it led to a relationship that lasts to this day.
Television was her refuge during the 1980s. She appeared in the series The Colbys between 1985 and 1987, playing Francesca Colby. It was a different register, but Ross kept the natural elegance that made her stand out in any medium shot.
Her return to cult cinema came in 2001. In Donnie Darko, she played the protagonist's psychologist and brought a much-needed calm to a dreamlike plot. Ross took the union minimum salary so that the independent production could move forward.
In 2017, she starred in The Hero, playing the ex-wife of Sam Elliott. It was a meta-fiction exercise in which the couple shared dialogue loaded with a truth that only decades of real life can give.
Ross has published several children's books, including The Little Ballerina. In 1984, she formalized her marriage to Elliott after four previous divorces. Her last credited feature film appearance came in 2019 with the film Attachments.
