Kathryn Grant didn't come to Hollywood looking for a famous husband. Born Olive Kathryn Grandstaff in rural Texas in 1933, she arrived in Los Angeles with a fine arts degree in hand. She started out winning local beauty pageants, but her real engine was a pragmatic ambition that led her to sign with Columbia Pictures at a time when actresses were little more than decoration.
In 1958, she starred in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. That film changed her professional standing because Ray Harryhausen's Dynamation technique demanded exhausting technical precision. Grant had to act against absolutely nothing while imagining monsters that would only exist months later on the editing table.
And she did it without complaint.
Soon after came her role in Anatomy of a Murder in 1959. Otto Preminger was a director famous for his psychological cruelty toward actors, but she held her ground against James Stewart and Lee Remick. It was the high point of her dramatic career in a courtroom drama that broke taboos about explicit language in American cinema.
She married Bing Crosby in 1957. The age gap was thirty years, and the press of the time scrutinized every move the couple made with almost violent zeal. Kathryn gradually decided to step back from mainstream films to focus on her family. But she did not stay still at her mansion.
In 1963, she graduated as a registered nurse. It was an unusual choice for a woman who sat at the table with the industry's royalty. So she balanced raising her three children with appearances on her husband's Christmas specials, where she projected an image of domestic perfection that hid her academic pursuits.
And the gamble paid off.
In the 1970s, she hosted The Kathryn Crosby Show in San Francisco. It was a local talk show where she proved she could handle the pace of live broadcasting without a movie script. That period allowed her to build an identity of her own beyond being the wife of the world's most famous crooner.
After Crosby's death in 1977, her presence on screen became intermittent. She wrote several memoirs in which she detailed her private life with a candor that some figures from old Hollywood considered excessive. In 2010, she was involved in a serious car accident in the Sierra Nevada of California in which her second husband, Maurice William Sullivan, died.
She survived against all odds.
She died of natural causes at her home in Hillsborough on September 20, 2024. She was 90 years old, and her last credited feature film appearance was a supporting role in Queen of the Lot from 2010. Crosby's estate is still managed today under the legal terms she helped define over decades of lawsuits and financial agreements.
