Kelli Garner never set out to be in movies. A talent scout spotted her dancing at a friend's bar mitzvah when she was fourteen. That chance encounter in California pulled her out of the classroom and plunged her straight into the film sets of Los Angeles. But she didn't start with lightweight teen comedies.
In 2001, Larry Clark cast her in Bully. It was a raw, violent film that shocked the most conservative critics of the era. Garner played Heather Swallers in a world of lost youth and real crime. It was the first sign that her angelic face concealed an unusual capacity to unsettle audiences.
And then Scorsese came along.
Martin Scorsese called her in 2004 to join the cast of The Aviator. She had to play Faith Domergue alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. That role demanded a maturity that didn't fit her twenty years. But Garner held her own against the major stars of the production without missing a beat.
Shortly after, she shot Man of the House alongside Tommy Lee Jones. It was a necessary foray into mainstream commercial cinema that helped her gain visibility before she returned to stranger territory. Garner has always been more interested in complex characters than in textbook heroines.
In 2005, she starred in the music video for Jesus of Suburbia by the band Green Day. That twelve-minute piece became a cultural phenomenon on music television. Its punk aesthetic and defiant gaze linked her to a generation looking for something different on screen.
The gamble paid off.
In 2007, she starred in Lars and the Real Girl. Many viewers remember Ryan Gosling and her plastic doll, but she was the true emotional anchor of the story. Her character, Margo, required complete restraint so as not to break the fragility of Nancy Oliver's script.
She made an absurd situation feel deeply human. It was one of the quietest and most powerful performances of her independent film career. So her move to big-budget television was only a matter of time.
In 2011, she put on a flight attendant's uniform for Pan Am. The ABC series tried to capture the glamour of 1960s aviation on a very large budget. Garner played Kate Cameron, a woman who juggled her job in the air with CIA espionage missions. Although the series lasted only one season, her screen presence and her talent for period drama left a lasting impression.
She played Marilyn Monroe in 2015 in the miniseries The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe. It was not a copy with a white wig and red lips. Garner chose to explore the actress's mental health and her toxic relationship with her mother, played by Susan Sarandon. The production steered clear of clichés to focus on the star's psychiatric reports.
She never wanted to be just a pretty face.
In 2019, she starred in the series The Enemy Within, playing an FBI analyst specializing in communications. It was a shift toward procedural thrillers where words carried more weight than physical action. But Garner has always preferred projects where the script has real substance.
Three years later, in 2022, she took part in the experimental narrative film The Seven Faces of Jane. The movie was directed by seven different directors, who each shot independent segments about the same character. The project premiered at the Bentonville Film Festival with a limited release in art-house cinemas.
The film had a tight budget and was shot with highly sensitive digital cameras to capture the natural light of the locations. The final edit brought together the visions of filmmakers such as Gillian Jacobs and Ken Jeong into one ninety-minute piece.
