Kenny Wormald didn't wait for an invitation to walk into Craig Zadan's office. The Massachusetts dancer knew the role of Ren McCormack was a poisoned chalice that big names in the industry had already turned down. But Wormald wasn't intimidated by the shadow of Kevin Bacon, because his training came from the streets and from world tours with pop stars.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, the release of Footloose put his face on posters around the world. Critics expected a disaster, but found an actor who brought a physical aggression the original never had. Wormald had been working as a backup dancer for Jennifer Lopez and Justin Timberlake, a school where mistakes aren't allowed and precision comes at a high price.
Before reaching Hollywood, his life unfolded in Stoughton, a town in Massachusetts where he started dancing at age six. His mother enrolled him in classes to channel energy that seemed endless. In 2002 he won the Master Dance of New England title, and soon after moved to Los Angeles with only a few dollars and the determination to conquer the world.
Dance was never the final destination.
After the impact of his first major leading role, the risk of being typecast was real. The industry wanted Wormald to be the eternal rebellious teen who solves his problems with a dance routine in a garage. But he chose to pursue projects that demanded more than flexible legs.
In 2014, he played Dennis Wilson in Love & Mercy, the biopic about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. It was a smart move. By stepping away from sequins and coordinated dance moves, he proved he could hold his own in dramatic scenes opposite actors of the caliber of Paul Dano and John Cusack. In the film, his portrayal of the band's drummer brought a necessary vulnerability that few expected from someone who had built his career on music videos.
To prepare for his characters, he often works through the internal rhythm of a scene as if it were a musical score. He says acting is another form of movement, just slower and more controlled. That's why he began alternating independent productions with commercial projects to keep control over his public image.
Wormald quickly understood that in film, relevance is a temporary state. That's why in 2017 he co-founded the studio Playground LA on Melrose Avenue with Misha Gabriel. The center became a go-to destination for professional and amateur choreographers alike, generating a steady income stream that lets him be selective about the scripts he accepts.
The spotlight doesn't interest him unless there's a technical challenge behind it. In 2022, he appeared in the movie The Happy Camper, and a year later he joined the cast of Dashing Through the Snow for Disney+. He balances these projects with teaching at dance conventions across the country, where he stays connected to the technical foundations of his craft.
His career isn't measured by Academy Awards but by his ability to survive a system that devours teen idols. He still lives in Los Angeles and personally oversees auditions for his academy. In 2023, the digital content produced for his dance platform reached two million followers on social media.
Filming for his most recent movie role wrapped in November 2023 under the direction of Tim Story.
