Paul Johansson is nearly six feet seven and, before learning scripts, spent his time shooting hoops at the University of British Columbia. His father was Earl Johansson, a legend of ice hockey, but the son preferred the hardwood of basketball courts. That imposing physique helped him break into show business in the late eighties.
In 1989, he landed a role on the soap opera Santa Barbara. It was a quiet start. He played Greg Hughes for a couple of years before moving on to projects aimed at the young audiences of the time. And although his face was becoming familiar, he still lacked the role that would pull him out of the pile of interchangeable supporting actors.
He was not your typical leading man.
He appeared in Beverly Hills, 90210 for 1993, playing John Sears, a character who already showed his talent for being unlikable on camera. Johansson knows exactly how to use his imposing presence to intimidate the viewer. That mix of charm and menace became his best working tool.
His career took a decisive turn when he accepted the role of Dan Scott in One Tree Hill in 2003. It was no flat portrayal of a teen-drama villain. Johansson built a nuanced monster who sustained the tension of the plot across nine full seasons.
During the years the series aired, he balanced acting with directing several episodes. In 2004, he won an Emmy for directing The Incredible Mrs. Ritchie, a TV movie he also wrote. It was a period of peak media exposure that gave him creative independence in an industry that tends to typecast quickly.
And the gamble paid off.
But TV success didn't stop him from pursuing more personal projects outside the big studios. In 2011, he took a risk by directing and starring in Atlas Shrugged: Part I, the film adaptation of Ayn Rand's dense novel. Critics were harsh on the final result, and the project struggled to find its place at the U.S. box office.
The industry doesn't always forgive ideological risks.
After his setback behind the camera, he returned to dark, complex characters. In 2016, he joined the cast of the series Van Helsing to play Dmitri, a thousand-year-old vampire. That role let him step away for good from the image of the suburban family man that had followed him for a decade.
In 2022, he appeared in the film Detective Knight: Redemption, sharing scenes with Bruce Willis. The shoot was made difficult by the lead star's health, but Johansson delivered a solid performance as the antagonist. He's an actor who knows the ins and outs of genre cinema and doesn't need big tricks to fill the frame.
In 2023, he joined the cast of God Is a Bullet, an action film directed by Nick Cassavetes. The production had an estimated budget of 15 million dollars and was shot mainly in various locations in Mexico.
