Kim Ji-eun spent three years working part-time at a café while cycling through failed auditions. There was no red-carpet arrival or lucky break in a shopping mall. In 2016, she officially debuted with a tiny role in the film Dream, but the pay wasn't enough to cover rent in Seoul. So she balanced commercial shoots with night shifts waiting tables.
During this early stage, her face became familiar to K-pop fans. She appeared in several music videos by the band DAY6, including I Wait and You Were Beautiful in 2017. These were short pieces where she barely had any lines. But they taught her how a high-definition camera works and helped her earn her first real savings in the entertainment industry.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2019, she landed a role in Hell Is Other People, playing the protagonist's girlfriend in a suffocating, dark setting. It was the first time critics noticed her ability to hold long shots without blinking. Until then, she had only been the pretty girl from music videos. The Korean industry tends to typecast young actresses quickly, and she needed to break that pattern as soon as possible.
Her career took a dramatic turn when she crossed paths with actor Namkoong Min. In 2021, they worked together on The Veil, a espionage thriller with a multimillion-dollar budget. To win the role of Yoo Je-yi, she went through a grueling casting process in which she competed against much better-known names. She won Best New Actress at the MBC Drama Awards that same year.
That project demanded a physical restraint she had never explored. She had to learn to handle weapons and move like a professional intelligence agent. But the most important thing was the professional chemistry she built with her co-star. The connection was so strong that they reunited for the same formula the following year.
In 2022, they starred in One Dollar Lawyer. This time the tone was completely different from her previous work. She played Baek Ma-ri, a wealthy family lawyer with a fiery temper and a wardrobe full of loud colors. The series reached screen ratings of 15 percent in South Korea. It was the project that let her leave supporting roles behind for good and lead her own productions.
Sometimes talent just needs a bit of technical luck.
After the success of the legal dramas, she looked for projects that didn't repeat the same narrative structure. In 2023, she led the mystery drama Longing for You, playing a prosecutor determined to clear her family's name. It's a dry, direct performance. There's no room for the sugary romance that tends to flood these productions. The script focused on pure, hard-hitting investigation.
In 2024, she decided to explore romantic comedy with Love Next Door. She plays Jung Mo-eum, a paramedic with boundless energy who breaks away from the serious image of her previous work. The role required her to perform everyday physical action scenes and to bring a much more physical sense of humor. Critics noted that her performance avoided the genre's usual clichés.
That same year, she also took part in Branding in Seongsu, an experimental project in which a marketing manager and an intern swap souls, testing her physical control. She had to learn her co-star's mannerisms so viewers would believe the body swap. She shot 14-hour days to cover both characters in the same location.
Filming for Love Next Door wrapped up with 16 episodes aired on tvN.
