Koutaro Nishiyama wasn't chasing instant fame when he entered the fifth 81 Audition. In 2009, the young man from Kanagawa just wanted a foothold in an industry that tends to chew up newcomers. He won the jury's special prize, which opened the doors to 81 Produce, one of the most influential agencies in Japanese voice acting.
He signed his contract before turning twenty.
His first steps in 2011 were modest and filled with supporting characters in series like Bakuman and Sket Dance. But his persistence in the recording studio paid off when, in 2015, he landed the role of Atsushi Kinugawa in Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu LOVE!. The project required him to handle a soft voice with a very precise comedic rhythm.
And the gamble paid off.
The industry no longer saw him as a supporting player. In 2018, he won the Best Newcomer Actor award at the Seiyu Awards, a recognition that often separates hopefuls from professionals with long-term futures. That same year, he voiced Ryuuichi Kashima in Gakuen Babysitters and proved he could carry the emotional weight of an entire series on his shoulders.
Nishiyama works with a vocal range that moves between youthful and melancholic. In 2019, he took on the role of Minami Natsume in the IDOLiSH7 franchise, a character that demanded a much colder and more distant performance than usual. In Japan, voice acting isn't just about pretty voices; it's about understanding how a character breathes on screen.
Before stepping into the booth, he prefers to study the silences in the script. As a result, his performances carry a naturalness that avoids the overacting typical of the genre. In 2020, he decided to expand his career into music under the Lantis label with his mini album City. It was not a young idol's whim but a search for creative control over his own sound.
Sold more than 10,000 copies in its first week.
But his priority has always been the voice booth. In 2022, he took part in Kizuna no Allele and stayed involved in long-running projects such as Ensemble Stars!, where he voices Kanata Shinkai. Nishiyama manages his career with a calm that is rare in a field as competitive as Tokyo's.
The actor avoids unnecessary tricks. In 2023, he joined the cast of Kizuna no Allele Season 2, keeping the distinctive tone his fans recognize instantly. Nishiyama has built his personal brand through characters that seem to speak directly to the viewer, without any obvious technical barriers.
For many sound directors, his greatest strength is his punctuality in emotional delivery. In 2024, he voiced Kyousuke Fujishiro in Yubisaki to Renren, a series that demands extreme sensitivity in the subtleties of the voice. The level of detail he brings to every syllable is the result of years of observation in the studios of Shinjuku.
Nishiyama regularly uses a Neumann U87 Ai microphone for his main recording sessions. In 2024, his schedule included several live events where vocal performance blends with stage presence in front of thousands of people. His contract with 81 Produce remains in effect, and his height is listed as 175 centimeters, a detail that often shapes the kinds of physical roles he's offered in live-action productions.
