The voice behind the punch

Hardly anyone expected a bald, egg-faced character to need such a deep baritone voice. In 2015, Makoto Furukawa accepted the challenge of playing Saitama in One Punch Man, and their life changed completely. The role was hard to pull off because it had to sound bored yet dangerous at the same time.

Furukawa was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1989. He decided he wanted to be a voice actor after hearing Shinichiro Miki in the series Mobile Suit Gundam 00. He had no connections and no especially high voice, but he had a work ethic that bordered on obsessive.

In 2011, they landed their first small roles in low-profile productions. But the anime industry in Japan is a talent grinder where most people disappear after their first contract year. Furukawa held on through the initial rush thanks to supporting characters that demanded an unusual level of physical force for their age.

That was a show of authority.

Her change of pace in 2019

Moving from action comedy to psychological romance is a trap for many professionals. In 2019, they took on the role of Miyuki Shirogane in Kaguya-sama: Love is War. The part demanded a frantic speaking speed and a vocal range that shifted from a seductive whisper to a hysterical scream in under two seconds.

And the gamble paid off.

They made audiences empathize with a brilliant student who was unable to confess their feelings. That same year, their performance earned them recognition from specialized critics. In 2020, they received the Best Lead Actor award at the 14th Seiyu Awards for their ability to carry big-budget series on their shoulders.

But Furukawa's work isn't limited to shouting in the recording studio. In 2018, he launched his career as a singer under the Lantis label with the single miserable masquerade. His songs move away from teen pop toward sounds closer to jazz and blues, because he wants his music to feel like a nightclub, not a shopping mall.

Technical Demands and the Future

In 2021, he played Sherlock Holmes in Moriarty the Patriot. It was surgical precision work, where accent and dramatic pauses mattered more than vocal power. Because Furukawa understands that silence in dubbing communicates as much as a well-shouted line.

Not everything has been victories in their career. During 2013 and 2014, they took part in several projects that passed without much notice or glory on Japanese television. That dry spell helped them refine their breathing technique and understand that in this industry, talent is worthless without iron-willed endurance.

In 2024, he voiced key characters in Solo Leveling and kept his place in the cast of Demon Slayer. The workload at these studios is overwhelming, and recording sessions can run for ten hours straight. But Furukawa keeps a low profile on social media and prefers that his name appear only in the final credits.

Production on the third season of One Punch Man began in 2024 under strict security protocols to prevent leaks of the original script. The cost per episode for this new animation phase exceeded the base budget of 160,000 euros.
