Junichi Yanagita isn't the kind of actor who fills stadiums with J-Pop concerts or chases fashion magazine covers. His profile is closer to that of a craftsman who prefers the darkness of the recording booth. He was born in Gunma Prefecture in 1987 and entered the industry with a clear goal: to last.
After training at the Mausu Promotion agency academy, he began landing minor roles in 2011. His first appearances in series such as Ro-Kyu-Bu! or The Idolmaster were brief. They were one-off lines and background shouts that helped him learn the craft under pressure.
And patience paid off.
In 2015, his career took a big step up with Gate: Jieitai Kano Chi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri. Playing Youji Itami required balancing a soldier's cynicism with the passion of a pop culture fan. That contract marked his first long-running leading role and allowed him to show he could carry an entire series.
Not all voice actors in Japan need to be the visible face of a franchise. Yanagita found a comfortable niche in the supporting roles that hold up the story from the second line. In 2016, he joined the cast of Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu to voice Ricardo Welkin.
But his range isn't limited to tough or animalistic characters. In 2017, he appeared in Children of the Whales, and in 2018 he joined the universe of The Rising of the Shield Hero. The industry values his ability not to overact during the most intense dramatic moments.
It wasn't all smooth sailing.
For several years, he balanced low-budget video game work with contributions to specialized radio programs. In 2021, he returned to his role as Hablog in the Made in Abyss franchise. It's a character that demands a physical depth few can achieve without artificially straining the throat.
The streaming market changed the rules of the game in Tokyo's studios. In 2024, Yanagita took on the role of Choi Jong-In in the adaptation of Solo Leveling. He is a key character in the series' power hierarchy, one that fans of the original material watched closely.
For this role, he adopted a much colder, more corporate tone. He moved away from the warmth of his early work to fit the dark aesthetic of the production. The success of this series on global streaming platforms boosted his international reputation and took him beyond the exclusive circuit of Japanese audiences.
In 2025, his schedule includes appearances in several fantasy productions whose titles remain under embargo. Because the Japanese production system punishes leaks with heavy fines and strict confidentiality clauses.
His profile at the Mausu Promotion agency lists his height as 172 centimeters and his blood type as B.
