Soma Saito stepped into a professional recording booth for the first time in 2011. He didn't do it as a typical anime fan but as a compulsive reader of classic novels who was looking for a physical outlet for his obsession with the written word.
He had won the special audition held by the agency 81 Produce three years earlier. But he decided formal education was non-negotiable, and he finished his studies at Waseda University before accepting his first supporting role in Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream.
Hollywood doesn't hand out anything for free.
During those first months, he picked up one behind-the-scenes job after another, plus ambient voice work. In Japan's dubbing system, seniority is respected with an almost military rigidity, so newcomers have to prove they can endure 12-hour days without their voice giving out.
In 2014, his luck turned with the release of Haikyu!!. Playing Tadashi Yamaguchi required him to work with insecurity and fragility, qualities that aren't usually the favorites of male leads, making a direct impact on young audiences.
That same year, he voiced Tatsumi in Akame ga Kill! and proved his tone could carry a long action series. Production companies began to see more in his profile than a melodic voice for romance dramas or niche video games.
His move into music came in 2017 under the Sacra Music label. Saito writes his own lyrics and composes much of his material because he sees a song as an extension of his literary storytelling, not as a simple marketing product for fans.
In 2023, he took on the most dangerous challenge of his professional career.
Replacing the original voice actors in the Rurouni Kenshin remake meant facing a constant wall of comparisons. His take on Kenshin Himura struck a balance between the calm of a wandering swordsman and the violence of a killer, steering clear of the cheap imitation of the versions recorded in the 1990s.
Success on television didn't keep him away from experimental formats, though. By 2018, he had already explored the phenomenon of Hypnosis Mic, bringing Gentaro Yumeno to life, a character that demands diction and rhythm worthy of a professional rapper.
And the gamble paid off.
His role in Idolish7 as Tenn Kujo allowed him to explore the bitter side of fame and technical perfection. It's a role that demands absolute control of his breath and a coldness that contrasts with the natural warmth of his usual tone.
In 2024, he added Blue Lock and the sequel to Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? to his list of projects. Production records indicate that Saito is one of the actors who needs the fewest takes to nail a high-intensity emotional scene.
Her background in Japanese literature shapes how she dissects scripts before stepping up to the mic. She doesn't just read their lines. She analyzes the structure of the dialogue and suggests changes in intonation that often make it into the final edit of the series.
Despite his media exposure, he keeps a private life shielded from Japanese media. In 2023, he announced his marriage through a brief, formal statement, with no photos or details about his partner, putting personal stability ahead of the noise of social media.
His contract with the agency 81 Produce includes strict confidentiality clauses covering his earnings from image rights in merchandising. His solo album sales exceed 40,000 units per physical release in the Japanese domestic market.
