Frédéric Cresseaux was walking along a Corsican beach in 1993 when he spotted a fifteen-year-old girl who did not fit the beauty standards of the time. She was not the typical skinny model who dominated the runways of Paris or Milan. That chance encounter pulled Laetitia Casta out of her rural surroundings and launched her straight into the hands of Jean Paul Gaultier.
The French designer saw something in her that conventional talent scouts overlooked. He made her his muse because her curves defied the androgynous aesthetic of the nineties. Her rise to fame was sudden and massive.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1999 the movies came knocking with Astérix et Obélix contre César. It was the most expensive French film production up to that point, and she played Falbala. But French critics were merciless about her move from fashion to the screen. The press did not accept that a Victoria's Secret model could carry a dramatically weighty script.
Before giving up on acting, she decided to take refuge in theater. In 2004, she starred in Ondine by Jean Giraudoux at the Théâtre Antoine. That decision to face a live Paris audience changed the industry's perception of her acting ability.
Raúl Ruiz was one of the few who trusted her with complex roles outside the commercial circuit. In 2001 he shot Les Âmes fortes, and the film made it to the Cannes Film Festival. That was not a stroke of luck but the result of choosing projects that moved away from her public image as Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic she embodied in 2000.
Ten million viewers watched her work on television in the series La Bicyclette bleue. But she was looking for something grittier and less people-pleasing. In 2010 she took the risk of playing Brigitte Bardot in Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque). That role earned her a César nomination for Best Supporting Actress and put any doubts about her talent to rest for good.
She didn't care about pleasing anyone.
Her professional and personal relationship with Louis Garrel began bearing creative fruit in 2018 with L'Homme fidèle. In this film, Casta plays Marianne, a woman who handles the rhythms of desire and grief with a coolness that surprised audiences. The screenplay, co-written by Jean-Claude Carrière, demanded technical precision that she delivered without unnecessary flourishes.
In 2021 they reunited on La Croisade. It is an ecological fable in which children take control of the world in the face of adults' passivity. Casta moves here in a light comedic register that hides a deep social critique of the inertia of her own generation.
The actress decided she did not want to wait for the phone to ring with outside offers. In 2016 she directed her first short film, titled En moi, which premiered at Cannes Critics' Week. It was a visual piece shot at the Paris Opera that explored the creative block of a stage director.
In 2023, she starred in Le Consentement, a film directed by Vanessa Filho that adapts Vanessa Springora's autobiographical book. She plays the mother of a teenage girl who is the victim of a literary predator. It's a tough role that avoids sentimentality to focus on the negligence and social blindness of the 1980s.
And the risk continues.
During 2024, she worked on the shoot of Le Médium under the direction of Manu Laskar. The project moves away from the big budgets of her early days and embraces more intimate, experimental author-driven cinema. Her priority has shifted from media exposure to building a solid body of production credits.
In 2025 she is scheduled to premiere Una herencia de muerte, an international co-production directed by James Sweeney. Filming took place across several locations in Europe with an estimated budget of 12 million euros. Casta plays a key supporting role that sets off the central family conflict of the plot.
