Lauren Hammersley didn't always want to be in front of the camera. Before her face appeared on screens across half the world, she earned her living as a professional photographer. That behind-the-lens perspective gave her a competitive edge when she decided to try her luck at acting in Toronto.
The camera didn't scare her.
Her first steps in the Canadian industry were modest but steady. In 2002, she debuted in the series John Doe and spent years landing small roles in productions that rarely crossed the border. But she wasn't in a hurry. She balanced auditions with photography jobs, and that financial stability let her choose projects with a certain freedom.
In 2012, she landed the role of Lisa Mason in the comedy Mr. D. She spent eight seasons playing a schoolteacher on this CBC production. It was her real-life school. There she learned that comedy demands mathematical precision and that time is the most expensive resource on a film set.
And audiences connected with her.
Her change of pace came in 2016. She joined the cast of Orphan Black to play Adele, Felix's sister. She was an eccentric, complex character who broke away from the rigid structure of sitcoms. She appeared in eight episodes between the fourth and fifth seasons of the series.
That shift toward drama opened the doors of streaming platforms for her. After all, Lauren Hammersley was no longer just the friendly face of Canadian public television. She had proven she could carry supporting storylines with considerable dramatic weight without losing her natural touch.
But her massive breakthrough came with a character designed to drive viewers up the wall. In 2019, We Bought a Zoo (Virgin River) premiered on Netflix. Hammersley took on the role of Charmaine Roberts, the hairdresser who becomes the main obstacle to the leads' relationship.
Charmaine didn't win anyone over.
The actress handled the backlash against her character on social media with humor. She received thousands of messages from fans who confused fiction with reality. But she always defended Charmaine's humanity against the fiercest criticism.
In 2023, she appeared in the series Sullivan's Crossing as Connie Fairchild. It was a smart move to diversify her presence in romantic productions. So while she kept filming in Vancouver, she maintained her residence in Nova Scotia to step away from the industry's pressure.
In 2024, production on the sixth season of We Bought a Zoo confirmed she would stay on the cast. The actress keeps her photography studio active and sells her work under her own label. The syndication deal for her shows secures her retirement before she turns sixty.
