In 2018, Lee Jae-wook made his small-screen debut with a minor role in Memories of the Alhambra. He played a scruffy hacker who went unnoticed by the general public. But casting directors in Seoul took note of him after seeing how he moved in front of the camera with barely any prior experience.
His studies at Chung-Ang University were brief because the industry absorbed him too quickly. In 2019, he landed two projects that defined his position in the Asian market. First, he took part in Search: WWW, and just a few weeks later he filmed Extraordinary You. The difference between the two characters was so extreme that the Korean press began to notice his ability to switch styles effortlessly.
The industry didn't see it coming.
In 2019, Lee Jae-wook won the Best New Actor award at the MBC Drama Awards. He was 21 years old and already carried the weight of big-budget productions. But the real leap in quality came when he decided to move away from high school student roles and pursue characters with a darker dramatic edge.
In 2022, the project that changed his career on a global level arrived. The premiere of Alchemy of Souls posed a major physical challenge for the actor. He had to learn fencing and Korean martial arts techniques for months before starting to shoot on the sets in Mungyeong. The series was split into two parts and aired a total of 30 episodes between 2022 and 2023.
The role of Jang Uk demanded a shift from light comedy to darker drama. And the gamble paid off.
During filming of the second part in 2023, the actor spent more than twelve hours a day on set. The physical demands led him to lose weight to look like a tormented warrior. As a result, his popularity outside South Korea soared almost instantly through streaming platforms.
But massive success often brings media scrutiny that the actor has always tried to avoid. In 2024, his personal life made tabloid headlines after his relationship with a K-pop singer became public. The pressure was so intense that the relationship ended after just five weeks (as his representatives confirmed in April 2024) to protect their careers.
In 2024, Lee Jae-wook took a step toward more mature stories with The Impossible Heir. Here he left behind swords and visual effects to play a cold, calculating young man who seeks to climb the ranks of a corporate conglomerate. The series had a dry tone and demanded long silences, which the actor handled with a maturity unusual for his age.
For the filming of 2025 on the period series Hong Rang, the production moved to rural locations to capture the aesthetics of the Joseon era. It's a mystery drama in which he plays a man who returns after disappearing for years. This project marked his return to the historical genre, but from a much rawer and more realistic perspective.
His departure from the agency C-JeS Studio in 2024 was a key strategic move. After his contract ended, he decided to set up his own management company to have full control over the scripts he accepts. He sought creative independence and the ability to choose projects in auteur Korean cinema.
By the end of 2024, the actor had more than 6 million followers on his official social media accounts.
The production contract for Hong Rang stipulated that filming must be completed within a maximum of eight months to meet Netflix's postproduction standards.
