Lee Jung-jin wasn't looking for fame when a talent scout stopped him in the middle of the street in the late 1990s. He was studying Horticulture at Konkuk University, and his life plans were far removed from the spotlight of Seoul. That chance meeting first pushed him onto the runway and soon after onto film sets.
It was a matter of pure aesthetics.
He debuted in the series Soonpoong Clinic in 1998, but his name began to gain serious traction thanks to his athletic build and chiseled jawline. Casting directors saw him as the prototype of the tough leading man. But he wanted to be more than just a pretty face on advertising billboards.
In 2004, he played Woo-shik in Once Upon a Time in High School. That high school movie, packed with street fights, gave him a visibility that television still denied him. He worked under the direction of Yoo Ha and learned that physique could become a liability without a cold stare to back it up.
But his career came to an abrupt halt in 2005 due to compulsory military service. He fulfilled his duties as a public servant in the Gwangjin district until 2007. When he returned, the market had changed, and he had to fight for supporting roles in comedies such as Mapado.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2010, he joined the cast of The Fugitive: Plan B alongside Rain. In this production, he filmed action scenes in several Asian cities and proved he could keep up the pace of a spy thriller. His paycheck at the time already reflected his status as one of the most reliable actors in the Korean industry.
His breakthrough came with Kim Ki-duk. In 2012, Lee Jung-jin starred in Pieta, playing a brutal debt collector who discovers his supposed mother. The shoot was a grueling physical and psychological experience that culminated in the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
That international award marked his transition from drama actor to character actor. Lee has always preferred morally complex characters over flat heroes. Art-house cinema allowed him to explore silences that commercial television usually filled with blaring music.
Silence became his greatest tool.
In 2016, he joined the cast of The K2, where he played Choi Sung-won. His ability to project a dangerous elegance helped him fit into big-budget political thrillers. He balanced this work with his passion for photography and even exhibited his work in prestigious galleries in the capital.
In 2020, he played Prince Lee Lim in The King: Eternal Monarch. It was an antagonist role in a fantasy production that required an imposing physical presence and a measured voice. The series was a hit on global streaming platforms and expanded his name beyond Asian borders.
He took part in the suspense drama Queen of Masks in 2023, bringing Kang Il-gu to life. In this project, he worked alongside Kim Sun-a in a plot full of revenge and secrets from the past. Lee Jung-jin earned close to 50 million won per episode in some of his television appearances that decade.
His contract with the agency Enter Station ended after years of steady collaboration. He manages his projects independently and keeps his photography studio in the Gangnam district. The crew who worked with him on 2024 praises his strict punctuality during night shoots.
