The coup d'état in Chile in 1973 forced her family to cram four suitcases into the car when she was barely a few months old. Her father was the prestigious neurobiologist Francisco Varela, and her mother was the dancer Leonor Palma. That forced escape led to a nomadic childhood split between Costa Rica, Germany and the suburbs of Paris.
In the French capital, she enrolled at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris and later at L'École du Passage under the mentorship of Niels Arestrup. There she learned to act in three languages before turning twenty.
Nobody handed her anything in the French offices.
After several supporting roles on European television, she made her formal debut in the Swedish TV movie Pony Trek in 1995. Three years later, she landed a brief appearance in The Man in the Iron Mask, sharing the frame for a few seconds with Leonardo DiCaprio.
But her real leap into the commercial leagues came in 1999 with the television miniseries Cleopatra. Filmed in Morocco with a pharaonic deployment of extras, the production reached a peak audience of twenty-five million viewers on the American network ABC.
That media buzz caught the attention of directors with unlimited budgets. In 2001, she appeared in The Tailor of Panama, directed by John Boorman, and in the action film Texas Rangers. In 2002, director Guillermo del Toro chose her to play Nyssa Damaskinos in the vampire sequel Blade II, where she performed complex sword choreography.
Global box office topped one hundred fifty million dollars.
Los Angeles studios wanted to pigeonhole her as the exotic woman cliché, with no nuance. So she decided to turn down several commercial comedies and look for projects with dramatic tension on the Latin American circuit.
In 2004, she headlined the cast of Innocent Voices under the direction of filmmaker Luis Mandoki. The film reconstructed the Salvadoran civil war and earned her a direct nomination for the Ariel Award for Best Actress in the Mexican film industry.
Her shift toward auteur cinema continued firmly. In 2008, she starred in the social science fiction work Sleep Dealer, directed by Alex Rivera, which won two awards at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2012, she accepted the role of Marta Del Sol in the television revival of Dallas for TNT.
That series ran for two seasons before it was permanently canceled due to a steep drop in ratings.
In 2018, she filmed the prehistoric adventure Alpha in the desert and icy landscapes of Canada. That same year, she faced the hardest blow of her life with the death of her son Matteo from a degenerative illness. In 2019, she poured that experience into the pages of the memoir Ir al cielo y volver.
Because she needed to film in her homeland again, she accepted the lead role in The Cow That Sang a Song to the Future by Francisca Alegría in 2022. The film competed at Sundance and explored magical realism in the forests of southern Chile.
Also in 2022, she joined the cast of the Argentine production Lie to Me and the ensemble feature Tell It Like a Woman.
In 2023, she starred in the crime drama American Cherry, where the crew shot for twenty-two days with digital cameras and a budget of less than three million dollars.
