Lily McInerny didn't need a big show of fireworks to get Hollywood's attention. In 2022, her leading role in Palm Trees and Power Lines made it clear that her gaze said more than any overexplained dialogue. Directed by Jamie Dack, the film required her to play Lea, a 17-year-old trapped in an emotionally manipulative relationship with a much older man.
And she nailed it.
Because McInerny understood that horror doesn't always come with screams. In this film, the conflict is silent and simmers slowly in the suburbs of California. Her performance avoided easy victimhood to show a vulnerability that is far more uncomfortable to watch on screen.
Before shooting the film, she read the script for months to understand the psychological mechanics of grooming. That technical preparation earned her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards in the Best Breakthrough Performance category. But what truly impressed critics was her ability to hold still, fixed shots without barely blinking.
She was born and raised in New York under the direct influence of a city that gives nothing away. She studied at the prestigious LaGuardia school, the institution that inspired the film Fame, where she honed a technique that shies away from theatrics in favor of the rawest truth. That training allowed her to break into professional film without going through the usual toll booths of youth productions empty of substance.
In 2021, she had a brief appearance in The Last Thing Mary Saw. That was a first encounter with the set that helped her understand the waiting times and the hierarchy of a professional shoot.
McInerny is an actress of silences.
In 2022, she decided that film wasn't her only path and tried her luck on the Broadway stage. She took part in the staging of Death of a Salesman, playing Miss Forsythe alongside actors of the caliber of Wendell Pierce. That experience at the Hudson Theatre gave her the grounding she needed to take on projects of greater technical and budgetary scale.
In 2024, her participation in the second season of Severance for Apple TV+ was confirmed. The shoot of this series was marked by absolute secrecy and production standards that involve multimillion-dollar budgets per episode. Entering the universe of Ben Stiller marked a change in the scale of her career outside the strictly independent circuit.
But McInerny's interest in complex stories didn't fade with the arrival of big contracts. In 2024, she shot Camp, a production in which she shares the cast with Joey King and which explores power dynamics in closed youth environments.
And the gamble paid off.
The production of Palm Trees and Power Lines was completed on a final budget that did not reach one million dollars.
