Lily Sullivan never planned to become an actress. In 2012, she auditioned on a whim, out of teenage curiosity, for Mental. P.J. Hogan was looking for a fresh face, and she ended up sharing scenes with Toni Collette without ever having set foot on a professional set before.

That experience derailed her plans to study medicine.

Filming taught her that the camera didn't scare her. But the Australian industry is small, and her real start was slow. In 2013, she joined the series Camp, an NBC production shot in her country that didn't get past its first season.

Horror as a Physical Refuge

Sullivan has a strong jaw and an intense gaze that conveys a strange urgency. In 2018, she played Miranda in the TV version of Picnic at Hanging Rock. It was a complex role because she had to step out from the shadow of the original 1970s film.

The actress decided she didn't want to be limited to period dramas. In 2022, she shot Monolith, a sci-fi thriller in which she is the only lead on screen for nearly an hour and a half. Carrying an entire movie with a single face is a challenge that would overwhelm performers with decades of experience.

The film was shot in just 15 days in the hills of Adelaide.

Lily Sullivan's name made headlines around the world in 2023. Lee Cronin cast her as the lead in Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment in the franchise about demonic possession. It was not an easy or comfortable job.

More than 6,500 liters of fake blood were used during the production in New Zealand. She played Beth, a woman who must confront her possessed family in an apartment in Los Angeles. The shoot lasted eight months of constant physical effort and night shoots.

The film grossed $147 million worldwide.

The Security of Closed Scripts

Unlike many Australian actors, she keeps her home away from the spotlight in California whenever she can. In 2025, her casting in Nebula, a science fiction story directed by David Yarovesky, was announced. Contracts in these leagues are signed well in advance.

Her working method is no-nonsense. Before shooting, she reads the script only once to keep the freshness of her first reaction. That naturalness is what convinced fashion houses to feature her in their global campaigns. She cares more about the technical process than the noise of fame.
