From Alabama to Berry Gordy's Office

Lionel Richie was born in 1949 in Tuskegee. He was not a conventional conservatory musician, but his home was filled with sheet music and the influence of a family with strong academic roots. His grandmother taught him to play the piano in the classical style, while the sound of the local university's wind bands shaped his ear.

In 1968 he decided the saxophone would be his tool of the trade. He formed The Commodores with his classmates and turned away from the career path his parents had hoped for him. During the 1970s the band signed with Motown, and Richie began to stand out for an unusual gift for writing melodies that worked on any radio in the country.

And the gamble paid off.

His shift from band member to star songwriter happened naturally. In 1980 he wrote Lady for Kenny Rogers, and the song held the number one spot for six weeks. That financial and creative move gave him the confidence to leave the group and start managing his own personal brand in an industry on the verge of changing completely.

The Man Who Made Anthems Pay

In 1982 Richie decided to go solo with a self-titled album. The U.S. market responded right away, buying four million copies. But the real commercial explosion came in 1983 with the release of Can’t Slow Down. That album sold more than 20 million units worldwide and earned him the Grammy for Album of the Year against massively popular competitors.

Nobody sold more than him in 1984.

His connection to movies brought him one of his greatest professional triumphs. In 1985 he wrote the song Say You, Say Me for the film White Nights. The track not only reached the top of the charts but also earned him the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1986. Richie understood before many other artists of his generation that the big screen was the perfect showcase for a ballad to become timeless.

That same year he coordinated the recording of We Are the World alongside Michael Jackson. The project brought together 45 music stars in a Los Angeles studio to raise funds against hunger in Ethiopia. Richie took charge of organizing schedules and making sure the participants' egos didn't sink the production. The song ended up selling 20 million physical copies.

But physical exhaustion forced him to stop abruptly at the end of the decade.

Between 1987 and 1992 Richie nearly vanished from the public eye. He had to deal with a messy divorce and his father's illness while his voice suffered from the strain of constant touring. He underwent several throat surgeries that put his ability to record again at risk. He returned in 1996 with the album Louder Than Words, but the market was no longer the same one he had left years earlier.

The judge's chair and royal protocol

Richie knew how to manage his song catalog so he wouldn't depend on new record releases. In 2012 he released Tuskegee (a country duets album) and made it back to number one on the U.S. sales charts after decades away. That move helped him connect with a younger, rural audience that didn't necessarily associate him with the soul of the 1970s.

In 2018 he accepted the role of judge on the TV show American Idol. His part on the competition was not that of a harsh critic but of a seasoned mentor speaking from the position of someone who has sold 100 million records. This TV work guaranteed him a constant presence in American homes without having to release new material every year.

In May 2023, he performed at King Charles III's coronation concert at Windsor Castle. He was one of the few American artists invited to an event of such institutional magnitude. His performance of All Night Long for the British royal family confirmed that his music had become a global pop culture standard, equally at home on a dance floor or at a state protocol event.

In 2024 the documentary The Greatest Night in Pop detailed how the recording session for We Are the World lasted exactly twelve hours straight and ended at eight o'clock the next morning.
