Lionel Richie legally adopted her when she was nine years old. She grew up surrounded by musicians and cameras in a Los Angeles mansion, but the world didn't really know who she was until she agreed to move to a farm in Arkansas in 2003. That was The Simple Life.
Television wasn't looking for talent but for conflict.
In 2003, the premiere of this show drew 13 million viewers for its first episode. Nicole Richie played a version of herself that clashed head-on with rural life in the United States. And it worked because she handled sarcasm better than her castmate.
But early-2000s television fame came at a high price. The tabloids focused on her weight and legal troubles for years. In 2006 the press followed every step of her court appearances after she was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.
Richie decided her name should appear in places other than the tabloids. In 2008, she founded her own fashion brand inspired by the aesthetics of the 1970s. The business grew fast and stopped being a simple celebrity adventure, bringing in millions of dollars a year.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017 she landed a role that changed how the industry saw her. She joined the cast of Great News, a comedy produced by Tina Fey for the NBC network. She played Portia Scott-Griffith, a shallow news anchor who poked fun at the millennial generation.
American critics praised her comedic rhythm and her knack for delivering cutting one-liners without missing a beat. But the series was canceled after two seasons. Richie didn't stop, and she looked for projects where she could parody her own public image (as she did in HBO's Camping in 2018).
For years she stayed away from major commercial shoots to focus on her businesses and raising her two children. But in 2024 she returned to the big screen with the remake of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. In the film she plays Rose, the head of a fashion company who puts the lead character to the test.
This film was shot in Los Angeles under the direction of Wade Allain-Marcus.
Richie signed on for this role drawn to the dark comedy tone of the script. At this stage of her career, she prefers supporting roles with real weight over leading projects that would keep her at the center of constant promotion.
Filming of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead had an estimated budget of 10 million dollars and wrapped in less than six weeks of actual work.
