Lisa Eilbacher was born in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, in May 1956. Her childhood had nothing to do with the spotlight, since her father was an oil company executive stationed in the Middle East. The family moved to Paris and eventually settled in Beverly Hills when she was seven.
An agent discovered her while she was walking down the street and launched her straight into the studio system. She started with small roles in series such as The Brady Bunch and Gunsmoke. But her face didn't really start to make an impression until she turned twenty.
In 1977 she appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man and shortly after in the miniseries Wheels. Her career really took off when Taylor Hackford cast her in a supporting but crucial role that required unusual physical preparation for the era.
In 1982 she played Casey Seeger in An Officer and a Gentleman. The script required that her character be the only woman able to get through the military obstacle course. Lisa Eilbacher refused to use stunt doubles for the action sequences.
She spent three months training with a Marine instructor before the cameras started rolling. The scene where her character finally climbs the wall was shot without editing tricks. So the exhaustion you see on her face is real.
She did all the push-ups herself.
Two years later she appeared in Beverly Hills Cop. The role of Jenny Summers moved her away from the damsel-in-distress stereotype of the 1980s. Her character ran an art gallery and was Axel Foley's logical connection in the city. The movie grossed $316 million worldwide.
And success didn't go to her head.
She kept working on projects such as Leviathan in 1989 and the series Midnight Caller. But the industry was changing, and she began to prioritize her personal life over the endless shoots that kept her away from home for months.
Her name disappeared from casting sheets.
In 1988 she married Brad May, a cinematographer and director she had already worked alongside on several sets. As the nineties went on, her screen appearances became more sporadic. She took part in a few TV movies and in the series The Last Chance Detectives.
There was no official retirement announcement or dramatic farewell. She simply stopped accepting scripts because Hollywood's pace no longer suited her. Her last credited appearance in a scripted production came in 1996.
Lisa Eilbacher keeps her residence in Los Angeles, away from the paparazzi. Brad May remains connected to the film industry, but she prefers to stay out of the spotlight. The last time she was seen at a professional reunion was for a technical feature on the shoot of her most famous films.
The distribution deal for her 1980s films still generates residual income from image rights.
