The Look Hollywood Couldn't Tame

Martin Kove doesn't have the face of a good neighbor. His square jaw and steely gaze condemned him to tough-guy roles long before Hollywood knew exactly what to do with him. Born in Brooklyn in 1946, he grew up between neighborhood movie theaters and an ambition that didn't fit the studio offices of the time.

His first steps in the 1970s were a string of supporting roles where he barely had two lines. But his physical presence was undeniable. In 1975 he appeared in Death Race 2000, a cult classic where his ability to portray violence without a hair out of place was already evident.

He was a supporting face looking for a foothold.

Shortly after, he appeared in White Line Fever, cementing his image in action productions that smelled of gasoline and asphalt. He worked constantly, but the general public still didn't know how to put a name to the actor who always seemed about to break someone's arm.

The Dojo as a Golden Cage

The script for The Karate Kid landed on his desk in 1983. John Kreese wasn't just a martial arts instructor but the embodiment of poorly handled military trauma. Kove decided that this man could not blink while yelling at his students, because blinking implied humanity.

The 1984 movie grossed more than 90 million dollars in U.S. theaters alone. That changed his bank account but also limited his creative options for the following decades. Audiences hated him with an intensity that jumped off the screen.

And that was her biggest victory.

During the filming of the sequels in 1986 and 1989, Kove kept a strict distance and didn't socialize much with the younger cast members. He wanted the fear to be real when they walked onto the set. As a result, he became a stranger to his own coworkers.

Surviving the Combat Uniform

In the late eighties, he tried to move away from karate gis and flying kicks. On the TV series Cagney & Lacey, he played Detective Victor Isbecki for more than a hundred episodes. It was his way of proving he could be a tough guy with a badge and real feelings.

But B-movie action films kept knocking on his door with quick contracts. During the nineties and early 2000s, Kove landed dozens of productions made directly for the home video market. He shot in deserts, in Eastern European forests and in low-budget studios where catering was a rare luxury.

In 2019, he appeared in VFW, an action movie in which a group of war veterans defends a bar against a horde of criminals. It was a return to the tactical, gory cinema that fans of exploitation films love.

The return of the human villain

The call to bring back John Kreese in Cobra Kai in 2018 was no surprise to the industry. The creators knew there was no story without the original antagonist. This time, though, the script let him explore the misery of a man who has lost everything and lives in shelters.

In 2021 he was part of the cast of The Last of the Grads, keeping his screen presence in independent horror cinema. His son, Jesse Kove, has also shared scenes with him in several projects over the years, including special appearances in the karate dojo saga.

Because the Kove name has become a brand of its own within the genre.

His schedule for 2024 included filming Killing Dante, a pure action production that returns to the formula of chases and personal revenge. The distribution deal for this project was closed in international markets for close to two million dollars before post-production was completed.
