Naples, August 1973. Luisa Ranieri grew up in the Vomero neighborhood with plans to become a lawyer. But theater crossed her path before she finished her degree, and she traded civil codes for the scripts of Leonardo Pieraccioni. In 2001, she made her film debut in Il principe e il pirata, and from that moment on, her face kept appearing on Italian screens.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year she starred in an iced tea commercial that went viral at a time when social media didn't exist yet. The line she delivered in the spot became part of everyday Italian speech for a decade. But she wanted to avoid being typecast as the pretty face of advertising, and she looked for roles with more edge.
In 2005, she took on the challenge of playing Maria Callas in the miniseries Callas e Onassis. It was an ambitious production that demanded a major physical and vocal transformation. European critics embraced her portrayal of the soprano, and that opened the door to projects with more dramatic weight.
Paolo Sorrentino called her in 2021 for The Hand of God. She played Aunt Patrizia, and her presence on screen drives the protagonist's sexual and aesthetic awakening. It's a role that demands a complex balance between madness and absolute vulnerability.
The boat scene off the Neapolitan coast was shot in a very specific natural light. Ranieri agreed to full nudity because she understood it was a fundamental narrative element of the director's autobiographical story. The film won the Grand Jury Prize in Venice and went on to receive Oscar nominations.
The audience responded right away.
Luisa Ranieri doesn't just wait for the phone to ring. In 2012 she married actor Luca Zingaretti, and together they built the production company Zocotoco. They wanted creative control over their stories so they wouldn't depend on the decisions of the big Roman studios.
The gamble paid off.
In 2021, the series Le indagini di Lolita Lobosco premiered, in which she plays a deputy police chief in Bari. It was a massive hit. The first season peaked at seven million viewers on Italian public television, and the show was renewed for several more seasons.
In 2024, she appeared in the film Parthenope, again directed by Paolo Sorrentino. That same year she shot in Budapest under Johnny Depp in the film Modì. She plays Rosalie, and the cast includes Al Pacino and Riccardo Scamarcio. The budget for this international production was set at fifteen million euros.
