Madelyn Cline

The Casting That Saved the Bank Account

Madelyn Cline grew up in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Her parents took her to New York during summers to shoot commercials for T-Mobile and Sunny D. It was office work for a girl who barely understood how a film set worked.

But things changed when she decided to drop out of college at 19 years old to move to Los Angeles. She had no solid Plan B, and her savings ran out fast while she went through one failed audition after another.

She jumped in without a safety net.

Before the million-dollar contracts came the small parts. In 2017 she made a brief appearance in the second season of Stranger Things, playing Tina. It was a cameo of just a few minutes that gave no hint of the impact to come. She also appeared in The Originals and Boy Erased in 2018. These were small victories in an industry that often devours newcomers from the provinces.

The process for Outer Banks took place in 2019. Cline auditioned for the role of Sarah Cameron while her financial situation was critical. The Netflix series premiered in April 2020, and the global lockdown multiplied its audience exponentially. Nearly 35 million households watched the first season in its first month on air.

And the algorithm did the rest.

The Move to Studio Films

Her relationship with Chase Stokes spilled off the screen and fueled tabloid headlines for two years. But Madelyn Cline wanted to shake off the label of streaming teen star. In 2022 she landed a role in the cast of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

Sharing scenes with Edward Norton and Daniel Craig on a Greek island marked a step up to the big leagues. Rian Johnson chose her because they were looking for someone who could play Whiskey without falling into the caricature of the trophy girlfriend. She received positive reviews for her ability to hold her own comedic ground opposite industry veterans.

So the industry stopped seeing her as just a pretty face for Instagram.

In 2023, the actress signed on to star in the new installment of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Filming was scheduled to begin in 2024 under the direction of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. This project confirmed her interest in genre films with high budgets.

Because her strategy is to alternate fan-favorite buzz with auteur projects.

In 2024 she joined the cast of The Jury, a courtroom drama that demanded a much drier, more restrained dramatic register. The film had a production budget of $40 million and was shot entirely on location in New Jersey.

The contract for the fourth season of her flagship series included a salary increase clause that exceeded 150,000 dollars per episode.
